The beginning of the path to pure prayer is the battle against the passions. There can be no progress in prayer while the passions are active. In the ferocity of the battle with the passions, even while the warrior fights methodically and with a will, it sometimes happens that the passions get the better of him, either through his inexperience due to the unknown form of the war, or through weakness. But for all that, the presence of the grace of prayer is not hindered.
