Experience Grand-Pré 15.11.2020

100 years ago today, the statue of Evangeline was being unveiled in Grand-Pré! Inspired by Longfellow’s epic poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie, first publi...shed in 1847, the statue was produced by a Québec-based sculptor named Henri Hébert, who created a variation on an earlier design by his father, sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert. A century later, the iconic statue still greets visitors from all over the world as they enter the Victorian gardens at Grand-Pré National Historic Site, and remains one of the most recognized symbols of Acadie. Here's to another hundred years! #Evangeline100 Photo André Audet

Change at Grand-Pré National Historic Site Our field school crews have gotten to know this tree well over the years as we worked around it and took shelter bene...ath it. Most recently, our extensive ground penetrating radar survey of the eastern half of the site shows a void in the space occupied by its uncompromising trunk. But last weekend Hurricane Dorian laid it low. This was not an 'old' tree in the archaeological sense and there are trees on the property thought to date back as far as the 18th century - possibly even to the Acadian occupation. I should have counted the rings, but judging from historical photographs this one appears to have been planted perhaps in the 1930s. It grew happily in the absence of competitors, decade by decade unfolding a massive canopy to capture the abundant valley sunshine, but in last weekend's high winds this leafy mass was a sail, and over it went. Change is constant even in the places reserved for memory. If there is any good fortune here, it is that Dorian's winds did not claim human lives on its thundering track across the Maritimes. Others, as we know, were not so lucky. And even at Grand-Pré, if this tree had been attacked more from the east or southeast than from the north, the winds might just as easily have sent it crashing into the memorial church. And then we'd be looking at worse images than these. Good luck to Scott and the guys as they clean up around our old friend.

Following the passage of hurricane Dorian, we have decided to cancel The Spirits of the night event scheduled for Friday, September 13. We wish to thank all those who participated in this event during the summer; we had four great and magical nights. Special thanks to Valley Ghost Walk, our partner for in this new experience.
