Eye Recommend 27.09.2020

Eye Recommend is a community dedicated to providing complete and comprehensive eye care to Canadians. This remains true, even as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times and face the challenges together. The health and safety of both the optometric community and patients remains a top priority. As a result, and as directed from the Optometry Colleges and Associations, many of our practices have temporarily closed their doors and are implementing new operating procedures. While many routine eye exams are being rescheduled, we are proud to see many of our optometrists still focused on delivering eye care solutions and helping patients through this crisis, with emergency and urgent eye care, contact lens home delivery and staying connected with patients virtually. We are all in this together and continue to support each other.

One of the leading causes of blindness in Canada, glaucoma can have a serious impact on one’s life. Glaucoma leads to progressive degeneration of the optic nerve which can lead to loss of nerve tissue resulting in gradual irreversible vision loss and potential blindness if not detected and treated early. (Source: https://opto.ca/health-library/about-glaucoma) Spread awareness this month as we encourage everyone to have a comprehensive eye exam.

This month we're focused on creating awareness of age-related macular degeneration disease which causes the center of one's vision to blur and is the number one cause of blindness in adults over 55 years of age. In support of the upcoming new generation of eye care professionals, our Eye Recommend CEO, Grant Larsen and a few of our member doctors have gone back to school this month. We present the value of independent optometry, giveaway backpacks to the first year students and share in their excitement for choosing optometry as a profession. This is just one great way Eye Recommend strives to preserve independent optometry. We have a bright future ahead!

Vision is priceless. Together, let's raise awareness, spread the word and help people protect their vision. Glaucoma may have no warning signs and many people may not be aware of the risk. Educate and stress the importance of a comprehensive eye exam this month. #GlaucomaAwareness

Did you know January 4th marks World Braille Day? Braille was named after its inventor Louise Braille, who in 19th century France created a method to help visually impaired or blind to read and write. This is a great day to remember the importance of accessibility and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. Celebrate #WorldBrailleDay with us!
