CANADIAN SLOVAK VILLA OF WINDSOR, INC. The Canadian Slovak villa of Windsor has donated $45,000.00 to the Solcz Family Foundation Respite Home to be built at 4400 Howard Ave. ... When the apartment building on the corner of Seminole and Alexis was put on the market, John Kominar and Lou Hulaj thought it was an ideal location for a home for many of our Slovak seniors. It was located across the street from Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Church on Seminole between Alexis and Chandler and St. Cyril's Slovak Centre was on the corner of Seminole and Chandler--in walking distance to Church and social activities. At the time, there was a need in the Slovak community for affordable, geared-to-income housing. The Canadian Slovak Villa, Inc. was acquired on October 1, 1984, through the efforts of these two gentlemen with assistance from the federal government through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the benefit of our senior citizens. This was later handed down to the provincial government and eventually to the City of Windsor. There were six members on the first Board of Directors: John Kominar, Chairman; Jan Kopcok, John Matuscin, Steve Matuscin, Mary Mazak and Joseph Ockaj; Irene Timko, Secretary; Lou Hulaj, Manager (1984-2004). The Official Opening of the Villa was held on August 25, 1985, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Villa followed by a banquet at St. Cyril’s Slovak Centre. Robert Montreuil, President of CMHC, Ottawa, The Hon. Bill McKnight, Minister responsible for CMHC in Ottawa, Hon. Paul Martin, several M.P., M.P.P.s, representatives from the Ontario and Windsor office of CMHC, city aldermen along with the National President of the CSL cut the ribbon. In 1988, Jan Kopcok succeeded John Kominar as Chairman and George Mihalo took the reins from 2006 to the present. Steve Vrablik became the Villa Manager in 2004-2018 and Anna Varga in 2018 until the sale in 2019. The volunteer Board of Directors was very active doing repairs, painting and erected a wooden fence around the property before the official opening. The present Board of Directors has five members: George Mihalo, Chairman; Irene Timko, Secretary; Peter Gallo, Ivan Sutak and Frank Varga, Directors. The Villa had a 35-year mortgage on the property which was paid up at the end of September of 2019. The Board decided it was time to wind up the organization and put the property up for sale. With the sale of the Villa, we are now in a position to make a difference and assist various other community organizations. See more
