If you've visited our office before, you've been greeted by a wall of old law books and like us, have possibly wondered how old these books are. Most that are displayed are anywhere from 135 years old to new, but the oldest ones date back to 1768-1770! They are William Blacksone's "Commentaries on the Laws of England" (Vol 1-4). Published by Oxford, these four books have thick linen pages, with debossed lettering from Clarendon's printing press. How did we end up with these o...ld volumes? The inside cover of Volume 1 bears two names: John Henry Lefory, and Thorlief Larsen (1910). An English military man, Sir Lefroy arrived in Toronto in 1842, and with the help of a Hudson's Bay Company brigade, mapped the geo-magnetic activity from Montreal to the Arctic Circle, remaining in Canada until 1853. Perhaps Lefory brought the volumes with him to Canada, but it is unlikely that Lefory and Larson's paths crossed, as the former died in 1890 in England, while the latter was born in Norway in 1888. However, the connection between Larsen and our firm is easier to conceive. Larsen was a Rhodes Scholar, studying at Oxford from 1907-09, before returning to Canada and joining the BC Bar in 1915. After serving overseas, he joined the UBC faculty in 1919, remaining there until 1958. Our former partner, Davie Fulton, completed his arts degree at UBC, where he also won a Rhodes Scholarship in 1936, then studied law at Oxford and practiced briefly with our firm, before enlisting in 1940. Our people and friends from Daley & Co recently attended their Pretzels & Beer online event - Noble Pig provided the pretzel making supplies and beer pairings in advance, then we met up on Zoom with Chef Jared and Maeghan Summers, who guided us through the process of making Noble Pig pretzels from our own homes! Today, we celebrate Geri Rines, paralegal, on her 25th Anniversary with our firm! Originally hailing from Princeton, then Calgary, Geri joined our firm in 1995 and has since been a valuable member of our Personal Injury practice. Previously, she had a varied and interesting work history that included being a Columbia/Tri-Star Films distribution booker, dealing with approximately 110 theatres throughout Western Canada. Anyone who knows Geri knows how hardworking, reliable, an...d loyal she is. She has always truly cared for clients, taking a personal interest in all of her files, which is reflected in terms of the relationships she develops with both the lawyer responsible for the file and the clients. Determined and courageous, Geri has maintained her positive outlook, her professionalism and her dedication to her work, even in the most difficult of times. Outside of the office, there is not too much that Geri cannot do, particularly when it comes to home improvement and crafting - her creativity is inspiring! Geri - we are grateful for you. Congratulations to Talia Smith, recipient of this year's Fulton $1000 @ThompsonRiversUniversityFoundation Scholarship! Born in Surrey, BC, Talia Smith is in her third year of the Bachelor of Computing Science program at Thompson Rivers University. Being part of TRU’s co-operative education program, she is currently out on a co-op work term at a local technology company in Kamloops as a Junior Developer. She has a passion for programming and working with clients, and hopes to pursue these interests after graduation, when she plans to move to Toronto to find work as a Technical Business Analyst.

Since the early 2000s, our Fulton team has participated in the employee campaign program, donating directly from our paycheques to support the work of @unitedwaytnc in our community. Coordinating resources to build stronger communities through a comprehensive online community resource directory, United Way connects people to help when they need it most. Today, we celebrate the retirement of our HR Manager and longtime #FultonFamily member, Wendy Freeman. Wendy was raised in Kamloops and first started with our firm (then Hunter Jebson Howard) in November 1982, before getting married and moving to Vancouver in August of 1983. Wendy’s time with our firm would continue when she moved back to Kamloops 10 years later she’s been with us ever since! Originally hired as a general solicitor LAA for Mary McGregor and Rick Heney, she ...then worked in Wills & Estates with Don Knapp. Always interested in technology, she became our Help Desk Tech aka our point person to train and troubleshoot, when our firm transitioned from a DOS environment to using the new Windows and MS Office systems a massive undertaking! For the last 15 years, she has been our HR Manager. Expecting her first grandchild to arrive shortly, Wendy is looking forward to spending more time with her growing family as well as golfing at Predator Ridge and travelling (post-Covid). She plans to set goals every year that make her uncomfortable, so that she’s challenged to get out of her comfort zone and see where life takes her. Wendy - we sincerely thank you for your commitment to our firm over the past nearly 28 years, and we wish you all the best and every happiness in your retirement we will miss you! Congratulations!
