G2surveys conducted Archaeology Marine survey on the Stolzenfels wreck in the Netherland using Kongsburg 2040 MKII C Multibeam sonar, Hemisphere RTK, PPP, DPGS, Ixblue octane, AML SVP, SV and Beamwork Acquisition and processing software. #Multibeam, #Bathymetry, #hydrography, #survey, #marinesurvey, #archaeology, #marinearchaelogy, #GNSS, #History The German steamship STOLZENFELS was launched in 1917 as ALTENFELS. Acquired as a prize by England in 1919 and given to P. Hende...rson & Co. by the Shipping Controler. Sold to Prince Line in 1920 and renamed EASTERN PRINCE. Sold to the Hansa DDG in 1924 and renamed STOLZENFELS. In 1939 taken over by the German Kriegsmarine and in service as SPERRBRECHER 12. In 1940 the ship in Kiel was equipped with two old 8.8 guns from the 1st World War. Sperrbrechers were ships equipped for clearing magnetic mines. They were mainly used to ensure safe passage of German submarines through the minefields. A thick copper cable, sometimes up to 10 km long, was wrapped around the bow. The hold was filled with a large mass of iron, usually bundles of rails. Huge generators supplied the copper windings with power (up to 600 Ampere), creating a huge electromagnet. With this, magnetic mines could be cleared, sometimes up to 100 meters outside the ship. Many Sperrbrechers have nevertheless taken to the air. To prevent sinking, they were often filled with a thick layer of sand at the bottom of the holds and thousands of empty oil barrels to create extra buoyancy. In 1988 diving team Ecuador found that the wreck was broken. The stem lies on its side over starboard and sticks out 10 meters above the bottom. An enormous anchor in the vault hole. Half under the sand is a cannon and in the holds many railway tracks and copper cable. The ship has a bronze propeller. Dive team Ecuador has around 2002 a spare propeller blade that has found a place at their clubhouse. Many 10.5 cm grenades and dozens of beer bottles were also found. The ship has three steam boilers and a triple expansion steam engine. A 3.5 cm cannon barrel was recovered from the stern, now on display at the Wreck Museum.
