At 6 weeks post-partum, most women are told that they can return to sexual activity. Most women report some mild pain/discomfort initially, however, this improves over time. Approximately 30% of women who have had their first baby still have pain with sexual intercourse at 6 months post-partum. Perineal tears/incisions are usually fully healed by 6-8 weeks post-partum. Pain after this is commonly due to how the tissues have healed. This can lead to tenderness and overact...ivity of the pelvic floor or abdominal muscles. Scar tissue can lack mobility or adhere to underlying tissues. These tissues can look normal yet they can be very sensitive to touch. If you are experiencing sexual dysfunction after having a baby, Pelvic Health physiotherapy can help address these concerns. Visit one of our 9 locations to help you on Your Path to Improved health: https://eramosaphysio.com/offices/ #postpartum #pregnancy #postpartumbody #sexualpain #sexualdysfunction #sexualhealth #sexualwellbeing #postpartumjourney #pregnant #newmom #postnatal #postpartumfitness #maternity #parenting #selfcare #childbirth #mumlife #breastfeedingmom #prenatal #family #postnatalcare #postpartumphysio #physio

Many women are concerned about returning to exercise after having a baby. You may be told at 6 weeks post-partum that you can return to regular exercise. However, there are many factors that can affect your post-partum body’s ability to exercise. Are you still experiencing pain or decreased mobility? Are you having problems with incontinence/vaginal pressure and heaviness? How active were you prior to pregnancy? Did you exercise during pregnancy?... Did you have a vaginal delivery or C-section*? *timeline may be pushed back an extra 2 weeks or longer Are you experiencing low mood or post-partum depression? How much sleep are you getting? Do you have low back, pelvic or abdominal pain? Other common questions include: Is it safe to return to exercising? Am I strong enough to do my regular exercise program? When can I start a running or high-impact exercise program? Pelvic Health Physiotherapists can address these concerns and help you feel confident that you are choosing the best exercise for you. It is generally safe to return to low impact exercises, however it is advisable to ensure that you are doing the exercises correctly and not putting any undue stress on your pelvic floor. Having symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (urine leakage, vaginal heaviness/pressure/pain) during exercise should not be ignored. A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can assess your low back, hips and pelvis, check your pelvic floor muscles and provide you with an individualized exercise program to address your needs. #postpartum #pregnancy #motherhood #momtobe #breastfeeding #baby #postpartumbody #newborn #postpartumjourney #birth #pregnant #doula #newmom #fitness #postnatal #postpartumfitness #fourthtrimester #maternity #parenting #selfcare #childbirth #mumlife #breastfeedingmom #prenatal #family #postnatalcare #postpartumphysio #physio

SNOW IS HERE This year GWHA wants to express the proper tools and technique this season to avoid injuries or further pain. Here are some great tips and tricks to avoid back pain from shovelling! ... 1. Pick the Right Snow Shovel Choose a shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length this will minimize bending, requiring you to bend your knees slightly and arch your back slightly while keeping the shovel blade on the ground. 2. Warm Up Thoroughly Cold, tight muscles are more prone to injury than warmed up, flexible muscles. Do your back a favour by warming up for five to ten minutes before shovelling and make sure to stretch your low back and hamstrings. 3. Use Ergonomic Lifting Techniques If possible, push the snow to one side rather than lifting it. Bend at the hips, not the low back, and push the chest out, pointing forward. Then, bend your knees and lift with your leg muscles, keeping your back straight. Keep your loads light and do not lift an object that is too heavy Avoid twisting the back to move the snow to its new location - always pivot your whole body to face the new direction. 4. Keep Your Feet on the Ground Slippery conditions while shovelling can lead to slipping and/or falls and strains that can injure your back. Footwear with good treads will help to minimize injuries from slipping. You can also spread sand, salt, or kitty litter to increase traction. 5. If Possible, Stop Shovelling - Use a Snow Blower Instead! Eramosa's team of Physiotherapist, Kinesiologist and Massage Therapist are here to help you get BACK to optimal health and function! Men's Health Monday Are you aware that on average, 64 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every day? There are two tests are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer:... 1. Digital Rectal Examination (DRE). DRE is more commonly known as the finger exam. A doctor inserts a finger into the rectum to check the size and shape of the prostate and to feel for any lumps or abnormal areas. 2. Prostate-specific antigen test (PSA). PSA is a protein made by the prostate. It shows up in the blood. Low levels of PSA in the blood are normal. Higher levels are a sign that there may be a problem with the prostate. It’s important to talk to your doctor about the PSA test when you turn 50, or 45 if you’re at higher risk. If you or a loved one has any concerns about possible prostate cancer issues make sure to visit your doctor. #movember #menshealth #healthymen #prostatecancer #getchecked #talktoyourdoc #menspelvichealth #pelvichealthphysio #pelvicphysio #physio #physiotherapy #menshealthmonday #gwha

Men's pelvic health does not only treat incontinence but also pelvic pain. Men complain of pain in the pelvis, abdomen, testicles, penis, hips and groin. They also present sexual issues like erectile dysfunction and pain with orgasm or ejaculation. If you have any of these symptoms, please do not be shy to reach out to the pelvic health physiotherapist. Below is a testimony by a male patient who suffered pelvic pain for years and how pelvic physiotherapy helped him manage hi...s pain. " I was referred to Michelle for pelvic health care approximately 4 years ago. The pelvic health treatments I received have taken care of some issues that were repeatedly misdiagnosed and treated with drug therapy in the past. Not only has the condition been treated effectively, but I have also learned how to recognize when the symptoms of the condition may be returning. By following Michelle's recommendations and suggested strengthening activities I have seen my quality of life improve dramatically.
