Since were all into recipes during COVID-19. Heres one for your gums! + = Make Your Own Salt Water (Saline) Mouth Rinse. Its better than an on the shelf mouthwash. Many shelf mouthwashes contain alcohol that can irritate swollen gums. A saline solution can reduce pain and swelling of gum tissues. It also has the potential to relieve a toothache because saline works to remove bacteria from infected areas. INGREDIENTS... 8 ounces of warm water (about a coffee mug amount) 1 teaspoon salt (any type) 2 teaspoons baking soda (optional) RECIPE 1. Bring 8 ounces of warm water to a boil. 2. Place the salt in the water while gently stirring until the salt has been completely dissolved. 3. As an option, dissolve the 2 teaspoons baking soda in the water along with the salt. 4. Let water stand until it's cool enough to rinse (prevent scalding your mouth). HOW TO USE Swish the solution around in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit the solution out. Avoid swallowing it. Nothing will happen to you if you do swallow it, but it's not good to do. BENEFITS - Soothes bleeding gums or mouth sores - Helps a sore throat - Freshens breath - Loosens and removes food debris This is being provided for informational purposes only as individual results may vary depending on the patient. Check with your doctor, dentist or pharmacist if you are able to safely take Ibuprofen, Naproxen and other NSAIDs (also known as Advil, Motrin and Aleve) for dental pain. While there have been circulating information about this, at the time of this post, there is no scientific evidence that it can worsen COVID-19 symptoms. If you are a patient at our office, please call our office during our COVID-19 hours and we can review your updated medical history and advise you accordingly if it is suitable dental pain that you are having now - we will also book you in the future to assess and address the cause of your discomfort. https://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-aler//72633a-eng.php
