As the COVID-19 pandemic continues its stronghold on the world, we’re looking back to the 2018/2019 IDS theme ‘Experiences of Affordability’. With access to basic human needs such as food and shelter becoming more difficult, 34as a result of the strain this virus has placed on the economy, the citizens of the world are now facing compounded issues. During their exploration into ’Experiences of Affordability’, the 2018/19 cohort looked to design as a method to understand the f...orces causing this economic disparity and used this knowledge to imagine more affordable futuresredefining and designing affordability in the context of the 21st century. Directed by Michael Nguyen and filmed over two years in Toronto, Mexico City and Lyon, France, the documentary follows a team of chefs, including several recent college graduates and employees, as they represent Canada at one of the world’s most prestigious culinary competitions, Bocuse d’Or. Throwing it back to DesignTO's event 'The Archive, the Glyph and the City' which celebrated the award winning projects presented at the 2020 DesignTO Festival. ICYMI, School of Design Chair Ana Rita Morais, spoke to IwB Alumnus Samira Matan, who represented the IDS Class of 2019-20. Together they discussed the students' deep dive into Ethical Smart Cities, and how important it was to bring their research to the residents of the city.
