Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership 30.09.2020

Time for another #illiniaqtuitspotlight! Today we are featuring Bronson Jacque, an artist, student, and writer from Postville, Nunatsiavut (Labrador). A student of NSCAD University, Bronson is completing his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and works as a Contributing Editor with the Inuit Art Foundation. He is passionate about multidisciplinary arts, delving into many mediums, but specializes in oil painting portraits. Whenever I’m painting something I take it as an honor to... be painting it. I want to do the best job that I can. For Bronson, painting is a way to document memories of the people and places that define his experience. He hopes to shed light on the realities of living in the north and to portray a sort of nostalgia for a place people may not know. Today we are sharing a #MentorSpotlight! Reneltta Arluk is an actor, writer, director, and producer of Inuvialuit, Dene and Cree descent from the Northwest Territories. Presently the Director of Indigenous Arts at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Reneltta has been active in Indigenous theatre productions across Canada and internationally for over a decade. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Akpik Theatre, a northern theatre company that develops northern and... Indigenous stories into professional stage productions. Reneltta joined Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership in 2017 to represent theatre and serve as a voice from the Western Arctic within the Inuit Leadership Group. Reneltta chose to partner with Inuit Futures because she sees the creation of opportunities for Inuit to diversify their abilities, both in community and in urban centres, as vital to their futures as artists. The partnerships and collaborations fostered through the project are essential to building networks and furthering the development of Inuit careers in the arts, particularly in the creative design and performance of theatre. For Reneltta, it feels good to be able to create opportunities for her community to have success that challenges institutional and western norms. For today’s #IlliniaqtuitSpotlight we are highlighting Darcie Bernhardt! Hailing from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories and now based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, emerging visual artist and curator Darcie Bernhardt has already achieved a staggering amount of success in the Inuit art world. After obtaining a Fine Arts Certificate from Yukon College in 2013, Darcie enrolled in NSCAD University where she graduated in 2019 with a BFA specializing in drawing and painting. As an Illin...iaqtuit, Darcie joined a cohort of young Inuit students and emerging arts professionals on a trip to Venice, Italy to witness firsthand the historic opening of Isuma Film Collective’s exhibition at the Canada Pavilion in the Giardini di Biennale. The Summer Institute in Venice culminated in the publication of the Venice Biennale Special Issue of Inuit Art Quarterly, the first ever all-Inuit issue of IAQ based on the Inuit Futures ilinniaqtuit’s experiences and conversations with other circumpolar artists. Continuing her relationship with IAQ and the Inuit Art Foundation, Darcie was the featured artist at the IAF booth during Art Toronto in October 2019. Art Toronto was more of a spotlight than I’d ever had before, I really appreciated that, she says of the experience. Having people interested in my work makes me want to make more. Darcie continues to develop her practice and has expanded her range to include lithograph prints. Her artwork is currently on display in the exhibition Worn Inward at the Grenfell Art Gallery at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Big news! Inuit and Inuvialuit language keepers along with Indigenous language keepers from every First Nation and Metis group in Manitoba came together to name the two buildings previously known as the Inuit Art Centre. Qaumajuq (Nunavik dialect, meaning it is bright, it is lit) is the name for the new building; Biindigin Biwaasaeyaah (an Anishinaabemowin name meaning Come on in, the dawn of light is here) is the name for the existing building. These language keepers rep...resent all four regions of Inuit Nunangat, as well as Anishinnaabemowin, Nêhiyawêwin, Dakota and Michif (Metis) speakers, to recognize the building’s location on Treaty 1 territory and Winnipeg’s location on the unceded territory of the Dakota people and the homeland of the Metis Nation. We are so honoured to gift the institution with these new names that point to a new a path forward for galleries and museums in this country, -Dr. Julie Nagam and Dr. Heather Igloliorte. See more

"We should all be proud of our roots and it's never too late to connect with our culture, language, and traditions," she said, reminding people that they should be patient with themselves. "I think it's important to be kind to yourself on the learning journey. We are all equal. No one is above anyone else. We all deserve a good quality of life regardless of gender, race, wealth, or experience. You belong wherever you are. Whether it is in post-secondary institutions, your dream workplace, shopping in nice stores, revitalizing your culture, chasing your dreams. Nobody can tell you otherwise. Your value is internal and other peoples' opinions don't equate to your value."

It's Friday - which means it's time for another #ilinniaqtuitspotlight! Today we're highlighting Jason Sikoak. Originally from Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, Jason is in his third year of studio arts and art history at Concordia University, where he is embracing his life as an artist. Jason has been making art for as long as he can remember, first learning to carve from his uncle Jack Mugford when he was a child, but he had not considered working in the arts full time a possibility. W...hile selling his art online, Jason was invited by Dr. Heather Igloliorte to submit a piece to SakKijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut (2016-2020). His pen and ink drawing Sacrilege (2015) was accepted to the exhibition, has subsequently been shown all across Canada, and is now in the permanent collection of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Through Inuit Futures, Jason had the opportunity to work with graphic designer Sébastien Aubin (Opaskwayak Cree Nation of Manitoba) on a variety of projects, including designing the Inuit Futures logo. Jason would like to continue to work in graphic design, saying I’ve learned so much just outside of the classroom mentoring with [Sébastien]. Jason is grateful for the opportunities he’s had through The Pilimmaksarniq / Pijariuqsarniq Project, and is looking to pay it forward. Heather is helping me and I, in turn, want to help other people once I’m through the program. Time for another #IlinniaqtuitSpotlight! Born in Iqaluit, NU, and raised in Iqaluit and North Vancouver BC, Napatsi Folger is currently a second-year MFA student in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Napatsi’s involvement with Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq / Pijariuqsarniq Project came about in late 2018 when she initially applied to a job posting from the Inuit Art Foundation. Since January 2019, she has worked as a Contributing Ed...itor to Inuit Art Quarterly, a position made possible through the IAF’s partnership with The Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership Project. In May 2019, Napatsi was a part of a cohort involved in the Inuit Futures Summer Institute that took place in Venice during preview week at the 58th Venice Biennale, coinciding with Isuma Film Collective’s installation at the Canada Pavilion. From this experience, Napatsi compiled and guest-edited the first all-Inuit produced issue of the IAQ alongside fellow Inuit Futures ilinniaqtuk Emily Henderson. It’s been unbelievable, the opportunities that I’ve had because of this project, and it’s really enriched my school experience and I’ve been able to do things I wouldn’t normally have done because of the Inuit Futures initiative and programming. I’m really appreciative. To learn more Napatsi's involvement with Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership, visit our website: https://www.inuitfutures.ca/napatsi-folger-profile

Time for another Ilinniaqtuit Spotlight! Hailing from Kinngait, Nunavut, Nakasuk Alariaq grew up surrounded by artists - including her great-aunt Kenojuak Ashevak and has always considered Inuit art to be of great importance in her life. Nakasuk speaks proudly of her heritage and of her deep connection to her relatives. Nakasuk completed her BA Honours Anthropology with a minor in Art History and Criticism Western University. Realizing that neither anthropology nor archae...ology were right for her, Nakasuk instead decided to follow up her minor by pursuing a Master’s in Art History at Western University. I chose to go back to art history because I realized that Inuit were recognized and valued for their contributions in Inuit art, whereas in anthropology, Inuit are the ‘subjects of study.’ The way I view Inuit art is that Inuit have been seen as partners and collaborators in the industry, whereas in Anthropology they have often been taken advantage of as research subjects. In a few weeks, Nakasuk will begin her PhD at Concordia University under the supervision of Dr. Heather Igloliorte. It is about time we have a collective of our own, without it being mediated by systems of thought that tried to oppress us and exterminate our way of life. Happy Friday! Today in our #IlinniaqtuitSpotlight series, we are highlighting Krista Ulujuk Zawadski. Originally from Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet) and now calling Rankin Inlet, NU, home, Krista Ulujuk Zawadski is a PhD student in Cultural Mediations at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Previously, she completed a BA in Anthropology from Carleton University and an MA in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia. Krista has worked for several years as a f...ull-time curator for the Government of Nunavut. When she’s in Ottawa, Krista also works across the river in Gatineau, in collections management with the Canadian Museum of Nature’s collection of more than 148,000 Inuit archaeological and ethnographic artifacts and cultural belongings. One of the biggest impacts that the project has had on me is being able to expand my network through the gallery, she says of her experience as an Inuit Futures ilinniaqtuk, I’ve met friends, artists and other curators. Recently, I co-curated a show titled Breaking Ground with another Indigenous curator, Danielle Printup, at the National Arts Centre here in Ottawa through their partnership with CUAG. It has opened up doors for me right from the get-go. Some of you may remember Eldred Allen (Bird's Eye Inc.) from our day of Livestreaming on National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st (scroll down our page if you missed it!). Check out this feature of Eldred Allen and Robert Kautuk’s drone photography in Inuit Art Quarterly. The shape of this rushing river carves an interesting pattern in the snow. The contrasting colours and the shape of itit reminds me of human veins. It is the source that keeps the earth alive. Robert Kautuk
