Want to do less and still feel better?. Got some reflecting to do as we close out 2020? This exercise is great for refreshing the legs and pelvis by helping with lymphatic drainage. It’s also gives you a circulation boost to the upper body after prolonged sitting or standing. It can also give you a bit of an energy boost. The How To:... Position yourself in front of a wall and lay down on your back Walk your legs up the wall Open up your legs to get a gentle stretch in the inner thighs and pelvis Hang out here for 5-15 minutes What’s your biggest take away from 2020? It was tough, but there was some good in there too. Calves on a Stool Do you have: Abdominal Pain?... Low Back Pain? Period Pain? Pelvic Pain? Pelvic Pressure or Heaviness? Just need to chill out? Try this pose out to get some relief! The How To: -Put your calves up on a chair, bench, or lots of pillows so that your hips and knees are both at 90 degrees -Roll your pelvis alternately towards your toes and then your nose a couple of times to find a comfortable position -Stay here for 10-15 minutes for best results -Repeat throughout the day as needed Tips for Success: -Consider practicing breathing in this position at the same time (see our post from last week!) to maximize the restorative effect. Has anyone tried this before? Thanks @amandathephysio for the photo! We hope everyone has a good weekend! #calvesonastool #breaktime #bellybreathe #irelandmpt #keepkingsvillehealthy #amandathephysio #pelvicpain #periodpain #lowbackpain #abdominalpain #bellybreathing #pelvichealthphysio #endometriosis #prolapse #postpartum #pregnancy #yqgphysio #kingsvillephysio #decemberzen See more

We commonly accept that we hold stress in our shoulders and jaw. Did you know that we also hold stress in our pelvic floor? In addition to breath work, this exercise can help to open up the hips and pelvic tissues. The How To:... Sit on the floor and bring your right knee in front of you and out to the side with your knee bent Extend your left leg behind you and keep your hip pointed down towards the mat Walk your hands out in front of you to fold forward. Hold for 30-60 seconds Sit back up tall and hold for 30-60 seconds to increase the stretch in the back leg Repeat on the other side Check out our Instagram for the video. #irelandmpt #kingsvillephysio #yqgphysio #pigeonpose #hipflexorstretch #glutestretch #pelvictension #stressrelief #yourphysio #movementexperts

There’s good reason why breath work consistently comes up as a strategy for stress reduction, improved sleep, emotion control and increased attention. By stimulating our parasympathetic nervous system (our rest and digest system), it helps to regulate our fight or flight response and bring about balance. Additionally, there is a a mechanical benefit to breathing well. It helps to ‘massage’ deep muscles in our abdomen, keeps our thorax mobile, and can help keep some tig...ht muscles in check. There are numerous strategies including deep breathing, square breathing, and alternate nose breathing to name a few. Use what works for you. We are demonstrating lateral costal breathing with this post because we find in clinic that this is a tougher pattern to master at first, and it is helpful in getting our rib cage working in 360 degrees. The How To: Use your hands for feedback. Place both hands at the bottom sides of your rib cage to guide your rib cage to open laterally with your breath. Breathe in through your nose, and exhale gently out your mouth Repeat for a couple of minutes, but ideally for 10-15. Tips for success: Let your exhale last longer than your inhale Instead of breathing deep, think of bringing your inhale further down Don’t force it With everything that we are all going through, we could all benefit from some of this. You got this, one healthy breath at a time. Check out our Instagram for the video demo. #yqgphysio #kingsvillephysio #irelandmpt #fightorflight #justbreathe #movementexperts #physiotherapy #restore #parasympathetic #lateralcostalbreath

The rotator cuff takes a lot of grief when it comes to shoulder pain. But when it comes to shoulder impingement, the shoulder blade (scapula) plays a critical role In controlling the position of the shoulder joint. Believe it or not, most syndromes involving the shoulder are largely due to impairments in the timing and control of scapular motion. Relatively small changes in the action of the muscles around your blade and thorax can affect alignment and forces involv...ed in movement around the glenohuneral joint, and can either lead to or correct impingement. The shoulder blade muscles are like the core to your cuff! Follow along our next series of exercises to improve scapular control and free up those shoulders #shoulderpain #impingement #scapularcontrol #shoulderblademuscles #irelandmpt #irelandphysio #exercisewithpurpose #keepkingsvillehealthy #movementexperts #physiofirst #dophysio #yourphysio #bebetter See more

Gratitude is one of the sweet shortcuts to finding peace and happiness inside. No matter what is going on outside of us, there’s always something we could be grateful for. -Barry Neil Kaufman Even with the crazy ride that 2020 has been, there is still so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Perhaps, one of the greatest gifts this year has given us was a new perspective on just how grateful we are for the simple things.... We wish you laughter and full tummies of turkey and stuffing. Physical activity is an important cornerstone for our kiddos to optimize their bowel and bladder health (along with a myriad of other benefits!!!) Not only does physical activity help to develop postural control and abdominal wall strength, it helps to enhance body awareness and intestinal motility. It also helps our babes become more resilient to stressors. The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for our littles are:... Kids aged 1-4 should accumulate 180 daily minutes of physical activity at any intensity that is spread throughout the day. Once kids are 5, they should accumulate 60 minutes of energetic play daily. For all kids ages 5-17, they should be getting in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. This should include vigorous intensity exercise at least 3 days per week, and activities that strengthen their bones at least 3 days per week. We know that we need fibre for bowel health. But, we know a lot less about the details of what we need. For our kiddos, their daily fibre needs are based on age:... -19 grams of fibre for 1-3 year olds -25 grams for 4-8 year olds -30 grams for 9 and up Ideally, 25% of our fibre intake should be soluble and the remaining 75% should be insoluble. In general, soluble fibre attracts water, improves digestion and maximizes nutrient absorption, whereas insoluble fibre adds bulk and weight. Foods that are a good source of fibre contain at least 2 grams of fibre per serving. Signs your kiddo is getting enough fibre: His or her poops are formed, soft and sausage like Their poop floats Their poop has a light brown (yellow-brown) colour Tips to optimize your fibre intake: Choose fresh fruits or veggies instead of juice Eat the skin! Choose bran and whole grain breads and cereals daily Less processed foods and way more fresh! Drink water daily to keep fibre moving through your system Chew your food Gradually increase your fibre intake to prevent gas and bloating Keep in mind: if your child has slow transit constipation, more fibre is not better! They actually need a low fibre diet. Reach out to your paediatrician and dietician for more support! #fibre #solublefibre #insolublefibre #wholefoods #chew #dietician #constipation #constipateduntilprovenotherwise #mykingsville #yqg #keepkingsvillehealthy #pediatricpelvichealth #kidsbowelandbladderhealth #irelandmpt #irelandphysio #bedwetting #overactivebladder #incontinence See more

Eating and drinking the right things, or not eating and drinking the wrong things, can make a substantial impact on staying dry, promoting successful potty training, and having healthy poops! If your kiddo is having a hard time with constipation or bladder frequency and over activity, you may consider looking at the following culprits: The following foods MAY be binding:... -apple sauce -arrowroot biscuits -marshmallows -bananas -peanut butter -tapioca -cheese The following MAY be irritating to the bladder: -foods or drinks containing red food dye -chocolate milk or foods containing chocolate -spicy foods -tomatoes and tomato products -foods and condiments containing vinegar -citrus -apples -carbonated drinks -sugar and artificial sweeteners -honey -milk -corn syrup -cranberries Your paediatrician and a dietician can be extremely helpful in getting your kiddo eating and drinking for optimal bowel and bladder health! #dietician #pediatrician #bladderirritants #constipation #bindingfoods #mykingsville #yqg #kiddos #keepkingsvillehealthy #pediatricpelvichealth #kidsbowelandbladderhealth #irelandmpt #irelandphysio #bedwetting #overactivebladder See more
