Spring is here, someone forgot to tell mother nature. This year we have had a cold start to April and there is still a lot of snow on the roof tops and lawn around your home. When we do see a warm up we can expect a very quick melt which means your home will need to be ready to prevent water from getting inside. Here are some tips. 1. Most modern homes have a sump pump. Today is the time to go into your basement and test your sump. 2. Walk around your home and look for any... damaged down spouts or eaves troughs. These are key components for pulling all the water from the roof away from the home. 3. Check the area where the downspout discharges, if it is blocked with snow and ice clear the area 4. Check for snow that may have built up or drifted in those areas not often accessed in the winter. Clear that area of snow if required Once you have done those items it is important to monitor what is going on inside. Make it a daily routine to monitor your home for moisture or seepage. Again check those areas you rarely access such as crawl spaces and storage closets. If something is occurring you can react. Left unchecked moisture in a basement can quickly lead to other problems like mold growth which is a health concern when it is occurring inside a home.
