Update 08:45 From the Ministry of Transportation Highway 4 to open to essential traffic only... PORT ALBERNI Highway 4 at Kennedy Hill will reopen to essential travel only between noon and 8 p.m. today, January 24th. Travel will be restricted to passenger vehicles and light pickups only. Vehicles will be screened at the Tofino/Ucluelet junction and at Sproat Lake and larger vehicles will be turned around. Heavy loads, trucks with dualies and vehicles towing trailers will not be let through. Please obey the instructions of traffic control personnel. This is a limited opening for essential travel only. Once these vehicles have cleared, a portable bridge will be installed to open the highway to regular traffic as quickly and safely as possible. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure estimates a lengthy closure to install the bridge. The ministry will update the estimated closure window for the bridge installation as soon as possible. The contractor worked non-stop through the night to build up the road base after a portion of the shoulder and travelling surface sloughed away. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure thanks Emil Anderson Construction and its crew for the round-the-clock effort to reopen the highway. While some progress was made, the base wasn’t building as quickly as project engineers had estimated. Overnight, the decision was made to bridge the damaged section of highway to open it as soon as possible. The damage to Highway 4 was caused by a large volume of rock released during a scheduled blast early on Thursday, January 23, as part of the Highway 4 - Kennedy Hill Safety Improvement project. The highway was closed to traffic at the time of the blast. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure thanks area residents and other people who rely on the highway for their patience and understanding.

October - Hwy 4 Schedule :)

Jiggers Fish & Chips 19.08.2020

Here's a copy of the Hwy 4 Kennedy Hill Project Closure Schedule to Sept 30, 2019. We apologize for any inconveniences as a result of this project, but hope you... understand that we are working towards a safer highway for all of us. This is an incredibly challenging and dynamic project We have encountered some unforeseen challenges in the rock slopes that have required modifications to the construction methods. Every step of the way, our primary objective is worker and public safety. A close second is protecting the existing infrastructure (hydro, highway, environment). We are working with many of the top engineering minds in BC to ensure the right methods are used to build this project. The blocky slope we are currently working on has the potential to cause some delays in the coming weeks. We expect some large blocks to come down during blasting operations, as this is the safest method to deal with them. We will endeavour to keep the delays to a minimum, however we ask for patience as we are doing this to maintain and improve the safety for everyone. There is also a traffic advisory hotline which will provide detailed and up-to-date information to help plan your trip. The number is: 1-855-451-7152. Information will also be posted on electronic message boards at either ends of the project and along the Hwy 4 corridor between the west coast and Hwy 19 as well as information posted to www.DriveBC.ca. For your own safety, it is imperative you respect all construction signage, and stay well clear of any equipment. Further project information is available on the Ministry’s project website at www.gov.bc.ca/highway4kennedyhill. Should you have any questions or concerns, you can leave a message on the traffic advisory hotline at 1-855-451-7152.
