Meet Johanne and Jennifer, our March Members of the Month! - - - We're a close-knit family, and as much as we enjoy activities with our sons, we also try to find things that we can do together. We have busy and stressful jobs, and finding a way to stay active is critical to our mental health.... We went to Q Rules the first time based on a recommendation from a friend. We are always looking for ways to stay active and connect with people, and this seemed like a perfect fit. After the first class we were pretty much hooked and now, two years later, we have made friends for life. Boxing has enabled us to build a community and relationships that have become incredibly important. There are also things inherent to boxing which help us feel strong and empowered. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Q Rules continued to provide this positive outlet. Coach Greg kept us on track by continuing 6AM classes alone at the gym so the usual crew could join in via Zoom! If you’ve been considering trying boxing at Q Rules, don't be intimidated! Q Rules is incredibly inviting and supportive, and once you give it a try you will definitely be back. Anything that can motivate us to get up three mornings a week for a 6AM class has to be fun!

Boxers! It’s time to get hit in the face again (unless you can keep those hands up). Starting March 20th, Q Rules is bringing back sparring. But here’s the Covid catch: lots of restrictions. Here’s how it’s going down:... Must be a current member of Boxing Canada. If you were a member in 2020 your membership is automatically renewed for 2021. If you are a new recreational or competitive number you must register with the provincial body. We can help you with this! Choose your first and second preferred time and your preferred sparring partner if you have one. There is no social distancing in this program. We expect all boxers to cease any sparring activity if they do not meet the Covid safety guidelines. Sparring opportunities: Tuesday nights Friday Nights Saturday afternoons Sunday afternoons Can't wait to hear from you!

Terrence Tiger Warrington was born in Liverpool, NS in 1916. His boxing career began in the 1930s and he became one of the best boxers in North America of his time. Tiger fought in light to heavyweight categories. He became the Canadian Lightweight Champion in 1935 and the Canadian Heavyweight Champion the following year in 1936. He was ranked by Ring magazine as one of the top light-heavyweight champions in the world. He was humble and soft-spoken, but well known for his... lightning fast knockout punches. Many boxers of his time avoided facing him in the ring because of his formidable skill. Tiger fought in Canada, the United States, Jamaica, and Havana during. He had 49 fights, with 30 knockout wins and only 3 losses on his professional record. One of his only losses was a close decision to Bob Pastor, who had fought heavyweight champion Joe Louis twice. Tiger was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1964. He lived in Liverpool during his retirement and until his death in 1978. In 2018, a statue was unveiled in his honour in his hometown of Liverpool. Photo courtesy of @nsshf

Meet Laura and Nicole May’s Members of the Month! These guys have inspired us during the lockdown with their dedication, enthusiasm, and humour in these strange times. Best friends since age 12, Laura and Nicole have done a lot together over the years including joining a martial arts program that eventually lead them to Q Rules. Before and during COVID-19, boxing has brought consistency and structure to our lives. It adds routine and gives us something to look forward to..., whether we're working from home or at the office. Boxing is empowering too; I am an engineer and Nicole is a lawyer, and it feels so good to train with amazing women coaches and business owners and fighters (and Greg too!). It's something we can take with us out of the gym and into our days at work and the rest of our lives. Thanks for sharing your post-workout pics and keeping US motivated too!

Meet Mike from a safe distance, of course! Teacher by day and beast by also day. He’s been a devoted member since he walked into Q Rules back in October friendly, hardworking, eager to learn, blah, blah, blah but let’s get to what really stole our hearts: his sick hand skills! We recently challenged our members to the old ‘ball drop’ hand-eye coordination drill, and it wasn’t that Mike simply set a new club record, it was his delivery, enthusiasm, and then the surpris...e at the end. If you haven’t seen his video, check it out in our posts. It’s filled with the kind of warmth, optimism, and spirit we all need these days. Stay fun, Mike! Thanks for being part of our team. I’ve always been an active person and grew up playing competitive sports. After blowing out my knee in my late 20s I found myself unable to play any sports that involve running, but I still wanted to stay active and get in shape. I guess I could have joined a traditional gym but I’m not really a gym guy. I’ve always thought lifting weights was boring, so when I heard about a boxing gym in the area I decided to check it out. I’m motivated by self-improvement. As competitive as I am with other people, I am most competitive with myself. As long as I’m striving to be better today than I was yesterday, I feel like it’s been a good day. Boxing isn’t exactly easy and there’s something very gratifying about choosing to do something difficult week after week, month after month. It’s helped me realize that I’m stronger than I thought, and that I should welcome the opportunity to do difficult things in other areas of my life as well.

The weather is getting nicer and now is a great time to start getting outside for some of these isolation workouts. Warm: 5 minutes of skipping, or better yet, go for a jog!... Warmer: Movement Tabata 4 minutes (20 on 10 sec off) - jacks - quick feet - mountain climb - punches Strength: 3 rounds - walking lunges (20) - run back to start - burnout 100 speed punches Combo: 3 x 3 min rounds 1-2 step forward 1 -2 step forward, 1-2-3 Give yourself a little bit of space to move forward. This combo is all about hunting down your opponent and pushing them back. Throw two straight punches then move forward immediately throwing another two straight punches so forward again and finish with the job, cross, hook. Take the first round to get used to moving forward, maybe just do the footwork and don’t throw any punches. Stay balanced the whole time, keeping your front foot flat when you step in, chin down, hands up. More strength: 3 Rounds - Modified pistols squats x 10 - in and outs x 10 - boat pose with weighted punch burnout Finisher: 2 x 2 min rounds Thrill today’s combo two or three times in a row moving in one direction. When you get to your target distance - maybe the end of your room, end of your driveway, or something you have marked in a park, jump down into a sprawl, pop back up and flip over to the opposite direction. This finisher should get your heart rate way up there with the addition of these sprawls. Bonus points if you make it a Burpee or a push-up. Watch the video for out of detail on every component of this workout. Hope you guys enjoy it and are able to get outside and enjoy the sun :-) Big thanks to my cameraman today @og_original_greg #halifaxfitness #cornavirusworkout #isolationworkout #boxing #boxingdrills #qrulesboxing #downtowndartmouth

S P E E D Today’s at home workout has a focus on speed. We’ve got drills to wake up your feet, your reflexes, and a simple combo that combines it all. ________________________________... We broke up almost every round into 4 minutes - #tabata style: 20 sec on/ 10 off There are a lot of great Tabata playlists on #spotify and #applemusic so find something that will get you going and keep you motivated :-) Round 1 20 sec each/10 sec break 4 min Quick Feet Lateral Bounds Split Jumps Sprawls Round 2 20 sec each/10 sec break 4 min Alternate between: - Light SBX/footwork - Full our speed punches * aim for 100 punches Round 3 20 sec each/10 sec break 4 min Alternate: - weighted punches easy - weighted punches fast tempo and high knees Bonus: see video for more ideas if you have a resistance band, a partner, or both T E C H N I C A L 3 x Rounds 30 sec drill 30 sec freestyle You have 3 rounds of shadow boxing, bag work, or pad work depending on your own home situation. Today’s drill is: Jab, step backwards away from your opponent, step back in with a jab-cross. It’s a pretty basic drill but it’s going to get your heart rate way up with all the movement involved. You are going to need to step back quickly after your jab then explode forward with a jab-cross. Give yourself another drill to alternate throughout the round. It’s your work out and I want you to determine what you need: one minute, two minutes, three minute rounds. Hell! Make it five minutes! F I N I S H E R 2 more tabatas!!! 4 min: 20 sec pulsing squat 20 sec mountain climb 4 min: 20 sec push ups 20 sec knee tucks Enjoy, take a post-workout pic, give us a like, send us a message, and see you next time! #qrulesboxing #downtowndartmouth #boxingdrill #boxing #homeworkout #halifaxfitness #canfitpro #partnerworkout #isolationworkouts
