You might have seen these smiling eyes around the clinic recently. Students Kyla, Hayley and Eugenia are rarely seen together so when they were we just had to take a snap. We are so lucky to have such wonderful students with us this year and they have adapted to their new pandemic roles flawlessly.

We here at Kensington Midwives have been quiet these past two weeks on social media as we tend to the breaking of our hearts. As some of you may already be aware, Houleymatou Bah lost her son on July 11th. Sidi Mohamed Sow was 21 years old. He and 4 other innocent bystanders were shot in Toronto’s west end on July 10th and despite the best efforts of both St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital he succumbed to his injuries the following day. He was laid to rest ...on July 17th. Houley has taken time to be with family and friends. She has been so touched by the immense support of midwives, clients, hospital staff - and in such great numbers the incredible Francophone-African community. She has navigated this process with such grace, strength, and courage. We are all in awe of her though that is nothing new. To be honest, words fail at a time like this. Trying to write the right thing falls short every time. As such, we will take a page from Houley’s handbook. Houley has a way of finding action in the place of words when words are hard to find. She is an expert in holding space, in letting the process play out, and in providing support when it’s needed. As a practice we are working to provide her, and one another, the skills and support she’s role modeled for us over her many years with our team. We know this hits home for many reading, and hope you too have folks to lean on during this time. For those interested, a gofundme page has been created to support Houley and her family during this time. We will have the link in our bio for those who are looking for more to do.

Our account was quiet for #blackouttuesday and we are postponing our line-up of scheduled posts to devote all upcoming content to further efforts in raising awareness and support for black communities across our city, country, and internationally. We have benefitted so much from community support during COVID-19 and feel an obligation to ask our supporters to utilize their voices and resources to stand up against anti-black racism. We will be making daily posts to highlight o...rganizations and movements that could use your time, efffort, and donations to make change. Today, we point you to Black Lives Matter Toronto (blacklivesmatter.ca/donate). BLM Toronto's mission is to forge critical connections and to work in solidarity with black communities, black-centric networks, solidarity movements, and allies in order to to dismantle all forms of state-sanctioned oppression, violence, and brutality committed against African, Caribbean, and Black cis, queer, trans, and disabled populations in Toronto. We ask you to turn to this organization for information on how to best support the fight against anti-black racism, and even more importantly, to ask those who can to donate to their operational budget. Birth is, and will always be, an exercise of finding strength, peace, and resiliency in the unknown. Check out some of the incredible shots captured by Ferenaz with @fifthelementimages of the labour and birth experience of Vasanti @the_motherbloom As midwives, we never lose a sense of awe when we are witness to the grace of labouring clients. Vasanti's labour started at home and ended at St Joseph's Health Centre. She started her labour supported by Safire and birthed her baby with Mary at her side. She turned inward, and to her incredible team of support, to find peace with these changes throughout her labour and the results are nothing short of incredible. Thank you for giving us permission to share such a special experience Vasanti! #kensingtonmidwives #SJHC #midwives #midwifery #birthphotography
