We really enjoyed this article - give it a read!

Kids Physio Group 05.05.2021

Baby A is demonstrating a very typical new walker pattern including: small and fast steps arms up in the air legs in a wide stance... flat feet bum sticking out A successfully turned around a corner however she is still learning to be consistent up on her feet. As her core and legs become stronger , we expect her walking will continue to look more similar to adult walking. She also will have fewer falls and will be able to navigate obstacles in her environment. In this stage of walking, it's also important to consider how the kiddo is getting up and down from walking. Are they squatting and using both legs evenly to stand up? These will be important skills to help A build up the strength to later walk with a mature pattern, run, jump and play ! #milestonemonday #walking #firststeps #learning #growth #development #babies #justforkids #wemakephysiofun #physioforkids #babyphysio

Baby M is taking some of her very first steps (with the added challenge of a water bottle!) Similar to other skills, when babies first start walking it doesn't always look like how we would typically expect! At this stage, babies are doing whatever they can to stay on their feet and it often looks like a waddle Babies are very wobbly and are only able to walk short distances when first learning. It's also common for babies to alternate between crawling and walking for a... period a time. For baby M, her future will include lots and lots of practice! Each time she works on taking independent steps, she will learn more about how her body moves (and the effects of gravity! ) Though there will likely be a few crashes on the way, we expect that week over week, M continues to become more consistent in walking! Walking for babies can be expected to look similar to a mature walking pattern after about 6 months of practice. However, if there is underlying weakness or one-sided dominance, the immature pattern may continue for longer, at which point it would be a good idea to consult a therapist for some guidance and help! #milestonemonday #walking #firststeps #learning #growth #development #babies #justforkids #wemakephysiofun #physioforkids #babyphysio

WE MAKE PHYSIO FUN While the kiddo thinks they're working on Pretending to be a sloth Hanging from a tree ... Trying not to fall into shark-infested water Having fun! The physio knows they are actually working on their Neck strength to keep their chin close to their chest and away from sharks! Core strength, leg and arm strength to hang on for dear life! Vestibular system while swinging over the water! Motor planning to figure out their next move and escape safely! At Kids Physio we are experts at hiding the hard work kiddos need to perform in order to reach their goals within fun games and activities! Our physios love being creative and tailoring every session to the child's interests and needs #kidsphysio #justforkids #wemakephysiofun #pediPT #physiotherapy #workout #fun #exercises #games

When babies are in the 4-6 month range, we start to see much longer spurts of tummy time! Even up to 30 minutes at a time! As babies have been building up neck and arm strength in all the previous months of tummy time, they no longer have to work so hard in this position anymore. When the baby is able to meet their sensory needs including playing with toys , looking at exciting things , bringing their hands to their mouth, they will start to really enjoy tummy time I...n this time period, expect to see many new skills arise in tummy time including: Rolling onto the belly and starting tummy time on their own to explore the environment Pushing on their straight arms into a cobra position Reaching up high to play with taller toys Pivoting on their belly to turn in circles ... and maybe even starting to rock on their hands and knees! With enough practice, this will hopefully turn into a crawl in the near future!!! We recommend practicing on a surface with some traction, such as a play mat or yoga mat. If the room is warm enough, put the baby in a diaper only, as this prevents them from slipping and helps them learn to move! #tummytime#newborn#infant#development#growth#exercise#pediPT#physioforbabies#justforkids#wemakephysiofun

ca.gofundme.com/f/lucyvandoormaal Lucy is a lovely baby girl who has SMAType I, the most severe type of SMA. This neuromuscular disorder causes Lucys muscles to weaken and atrophy, eventually leading to the loss of voluntary control of her muscles. Babys with SMA Type 1 that go untreated typically dont survive past 18 months of age. Lucy is currently receiving one medication (Spinraza) that can help slow the disease progression, but because of her severe type, she will ...need more help. Luckly, Lucy was just approved for a new gene replacement therapy drug called Zolgensma, which could help save her life. Unfortunately, this drug is not yet covered in Canada and comes with an enormous cost to the family of $3 Million Dollars. The family have started a go fund me campaign and would appreciate greatly any help that we can all provide. If you are unable to donate, perhaps you can help by sharing her story. Thank you on behalf of Lucy and her lovely family! See more

Calling all Mama and Papa bears, do you remember this classic game?? Physio Tasha took a stroll down memory lane while thinking of some fun outdoor games to do with the family. Do you remember intensely eyeing each chair as you walked passed it in musical chairs? Its time to get outdoors and bring back some of the classics! To play Musical Hoops, you can use hoops, old towels laid on the ground or lawn chairs. The Music Master will play music letting the player...(s) know its time to dance and jump around the hoops (theres always one less item then their are players). When they pause the music, jump into the hoop! If you dont make it in, remove a hoop and the music starts again. Last one standing becomes the Music Master! Have fun! #physiotherapy #wemakephysiofun #vancouverphysio #kidsphysio #kidsphysiotherapists #outdooractivities #games #musicalhoops #kidsgames See more

Walking up inclines or hills is a great way to challenge your kiddo's core strength on the playground or even the hills around your neighbourhood! When going upwards on a slope, the body's centre of gravity changes and we must adapt accordingly with our trunk and limbs, and lean forward to maintain our balance. In turn, the core muscles are turned on and working hard! If your kiddo is new at this skill our body is also putting in extra effort against the elevation and gravi...ty with each step, so your child is definitely getting a great workout! Stepping up a hill is also a way to help your child maintain flexibility in the calves and ankles! On an incline, the feet and ankles are positioned in an upward slant, putting the back of the legs on a stretch. This is especially helpful for those tip toe walkers as this exercise helps them stretch their tight calves and bring those heels down. #workout #kidworkouts #physioforkids #vancouverphysio #kidsphysio #kidsphysiotherapists #babyphysio #momsvanbcouver #yvrbaby #yvrbabies #yvrkidst #walking #hills See more

We made the conscious choice not to post anything yesterday to make room for BIPOC voices. We are listening, learning and investing time and finances in an effort to be part of the solution. As an organization that prides ourselves on diversity and inclusion, we realize that we have to do better when it comes to race. We are working- with outside support- to curate an implicit bias course + reading list for our employees to educate ourselves on how to be better aspiring allie...s. We have included a link in our bio to a resource bank created by Sarah Sophia Flicker and Alyssa Klein where we can start. We highly recommend you engage with these resources, as well as with original BIPOC content and ideas on instagram, with us so that we can learn together. We are sharing posts by @ohhappydani, a black artist that uses her talent to educate others on how to incite change. And thats a wrap ...for National Physio Month that is! Thank you for following us along this May to celebrate our amazing physiotherapists! We had so much fun honouring each and every one of them for the incredible work they do to help kiddos succeed, and also hope you enjoyed us sharing behind the scenes of why being a pediatric physio is the best job ever! Our therapists sure are passionate about what they do! #joblove ... This years Physio Month has definitely been one to remember. From fine-tuning Telehealth to make sure it is equally effective and fun as in-person sessions, to providing weekly educational talks to support families and kiddos while we stay at home, and finally to our clinics beginning to re-open our doors while seamlessly incorporating thorough safety standards, KPG is so proud to have worked hard together as a strong team during these tough times. And we couldnt have done it without your support along the way! Happy Physio Month again to all of the amazing therapists in our community. Stayed tune for more awesome shares from KPG, looking forward to seeing some of you in person again and have a wonderful week! See more

Did you know that Physiotherapists are Primary Healthcare Providers? Every amazing therapist at Kids Physio plays an integral role on a childs health care team, and goes above and beyond to advocate for their kiddos! For Physio Month weve asked a few of our therapists to share what they love about being a pediatric physiotherapist, so you can get to know them a bit better! Today wed like to shine the spotlight on physio Lexy! How long have you been a physiothe...rapist? I have been a physio since 2018 but started as a volunteer at kids physio 2017 then a student then a PT ! S/O to my mentor Silvana who was with me through all those stages What is your favorite part about being a pediatric physio? My favourite part about being a paediatric physio other than the witty banter and animal noises (obvious favs) is showing kids what amazing things they are capable of when you give them the tools to succeed and challenge themselves they are unstoppable! I am in constant awe of children and their resilience and positive energy! What is your favorite game you like to play in your sessions? One of my favourite games/exercises to play would have to be anything on the p-nut ball and animal bean bag target throwing! Give thanks to your physio next time you see them online or in person! You may have heard that provinces across Canada have begun announcing their plans for allowing clinics like ours to physically re-open! As excited as we are to see you again, we are being very cautious and putting a lot of time into the new policies and procedures required to do this safely. For that reason, we still recommend virtual visits for most kids. They have been super successful (see our VIRTUAL story highlights to learn more and get a sneak peek into some of ou...r virtual sessions!) and will continue to be the most appropriate option for a lot of families over the coming weeks. Your physiotherapist, or one of our awesome administrators, will be in touch with you soon so you can decide together what is best for your family. Give us a call or email if you have any questions, or if you feel that an in-person session is the best option to support your child in reaching their goals. We always love to hear from you. Who misses playgrounds?? With playgrounds and indoor play spaces being closed, a lot of physical skills that our kiddos naturally encountered and developed in has come to a halt Lucky for you, weve got it covered! Here is a way to mimic surfaces that aims to challenge your kiddos balance ... You need a piece of tape/rope or something to mark the floor, and all those stuffies that have finally found its purpose! Just like little C&C here, you can walk forward, or backward, with the goal to rescue all their animal friends from a sinking island! Make sure you stay on the line or else tuna fishies will nibble your toes!! Make it competitive a sibling or adult or use a timer to see if they can beat their own score They wont even know theyre engaging a bunch of body systems, working on coordination, getting stronger and promoting their gross motor skills! Although we have to be apart physically, were here to help support your baby through their motor development virtually! Its been amazing to be able to support our new parents even when our physical clinics are closed! We are here to support you with: Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) Torticollis (a preference to turn head to one side)... Motor milestone delays Atypical movement patterns and more! To help ensure you have access to physiotherapy for your baby even during these times, our physios are offering telehealth sessions for babies ! These sessions allow you to get started treating (or preventing!) your babys concerns from the safety of your home in order to reduce the risk of long term effects due to delaying treatment. During these sessions, the physio will assess the babys movement in multiple positions with your assistance (and the help of their favourite toys ). Using a baby doll, photos or videos, the physio will then prescribe exercises specific to your babys concerns to get them on track! #physiotherapy #babies #wemakephysiofun #vancouverphysio #kidsphysio #kidsphysiotherapists #instababies #telehealth #virtualappointments See more
