Ever feel like you've studied the hardest you can, but you end up not remembering things you know you remembered before, or making careless mistakes? Learn how to learn ACTIVELY, not passively, so you can study SMARTER, not harder. Research shows that when given the opportunity to actively engage with the information they're learning, students perform better.... Try active learning with these 2 easy tips: Take complete notes. Notes aren't helpful if you have to decipher it when you get home! Writing accurate notes shows that you actually understand what your teacher's talking about, and are great resources for when you study later. Actively participate in your classes! Online classes need your love too. Speak up and voice your thoughts and questions. You're more likely to remember something you mentioned in class in comparison to things other people say. Study SMARTER, not harder, so you have more time to do kick back, relax, and enjoy your free time!

Luna Education 05.08.2020

Meet Stephanie! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: I teach Math and Chinese.... Q: Why did you become a tutor? A: I have always worked with children - either through volunteering experiences or through tutoring. My passion has grown as I continue to support my students in achieving their goals. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: My favourite part of teaching is when my students understand material that they’ve been struggling with. At the same time, I’ve built strong relationships with all my students and am humbled for them to see me as a mentor and friend, other than just a teacher. Q: What is your teaching style? A: I like to teach students through examples after explaining the concepts. To ensure that my students actually understand the material, I make interesting examples that can relate to their hobbies to keep them interested. Q: If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? A: Since after watching the Theory of Everything, I would like to meet Stephen Hawking. He is a strong man who continued on with his career and aspirations despite his disability. His story is really inspiring to everyone and I would love the opportunity to meet him. Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? A: I will never get tired of Japan because of their food and cute items! Learn from tutors like Stephanie at Luna Education! Meet Cici! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: I tutor English, Math, Science, Socials as well some SAT subjects.... Q: What is your experience as a teacher? A: Other than being a private tutor at Luna, I’ve had several chances to accumulate teaching experience. I have been volunteering in rural China as a teacher since grade five, and I also had the chance to tutor students on a project in Guatemala in 2016. Apart from that, I have continued to be a peer tutor at my school, teaching other students my age. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: My favourite part of teaching is watching my students gradually come to grasp a technique or concept, and then even start to like the subject. Q: What is your teaching style? A: I am more of a demonstrator when it comes to sciences and math. For example, I would show and explain how to solve a question first, ask my students to pay attention to the steps and procedures and then allow them to try one themselves. But when it comes to humanities subjects, I am more of a facilitator since questions are more open ended and up for interpretations. I believe in guiding my students through probing questions for them to come to conclusions on their own. Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? A: I would visit Eastern Europe because of the beautiful views, deep history and cheaper standards of living. Q: If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? A: I would like to meet Michelle Obama to discuss her future presidential campaign! #Michelle2020 Learn from tutors like Cici at Luna Education! Meet Justine! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: I tutor lower level Math.... Q: Why did you become a tutor? A: Other than my higher than average grades in Math, I also have a lot of experience teaching students around and below my age. Not only that but I always worked with a tutor as a student, so I personally know the traits that define the quality of a good tutor. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: My favourite part of teaching would have to be when a student finally understands a concept they've been struggling in. There's just something so satisfying about being able to successfully teach something to someone who has been needing support. Q: What is your teaching style? A: When I teach, I tend to focus on one question and thoroughly explain the specific concept to the student. Once they have a firm grasp of the concept, I let them do the other questions while monitoring them and occasionally offering help. I find this method really effective because once they fully understand a concept they can independently advance to more difficult questions. Providing a deeper understanding of a concept also helps the student remember and apply it to other concepts. Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? A: Japan - I just love the culture, including the food, and I watch a lot of anime! Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? A: Telekinesis - so that I can reach things without having to get up. Learn from tutors like Justine at Luna Education! Meet Bianca! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: I tutor English, Math and Science.... Q: Why did you become a tutor? A: I have done many volunteer experiences related to teaching/tutoring such as being an assistant skate coach, reading and math mentor for children at community centres, and being a peer mentor in high school for junior science classes. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: Although it sounds cliche, one of my favourite parts of teaching is having the student experience the "ah-ha!"or the "lightbulb" moment. It makes me so happy and honoured to take part in the progress that leads up to that moment and the continued process afterwards. Q: What is your teaching style? A: My teaching style is of a demonstrator, where I show students what they need to know and encourage them to think critically for themselves. I enjoy being creative and developing different ways of teaching to find one that bests suits each specific student's needs in their educational progress, and also makes learning fun! Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would go to Iceland to see Aurora Borealis as it is a magnificent sight to behold and the Blue Lagoon with its natural healing powers. Also, I would travel all over Europe to see the architecture and perhaps pay a visit to the countrysides as well; they seem so lovely, quaint, and peaceful. Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I would have the ability transport from one place to another in a blink of an eye as it would save a lot of time, energy, and money spent on either commuting or paying for gas/plane tickets! Meet Kiana! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: Biology has always been my way to go! Exploring the nitty-gritty of each and every single cell in your body and what they go through to make us function better as human beings gives me the incentive to pass on my knowledge to students.... Q: Why did you become a Biology tutor? A: I became a tutor because of my passion and enthusiasm to share my knowledge to make a contribution to the next generation. Teaching allows me to use my background in Biology and Biomedical Sciences as well as dedication and patience to influence my students. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: When tutoring someone, you’re not just showing up and getting a series of tasks done you’re making a difference in a student’s life. Performing a job like this gives you a sense of gratification that will warmly get you through your day. Combine that with the fact that you’re paving the road for someone else to get that same kind of fulfillment, and you’ve got a job that benefits everyone involved. Q: What is your teaching style? A: As different students have different needs, in my classes you will find me as a quite flexible and fun individual tutor. Together, we will plan your sessions and record progress of your learning as we move forward. Throughout the journey, you will be not only more confident of yourself on the subject, but also you will be able to generate ideas and make hypotheses. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? I hip hop dance and play the keyboard a nd guitar. If you enjoy dancing like me, give me a shout we can do something fun together! I also enjoy reading, especially those written by Walter Isaacson and Albert Camus. I also like to watch movies, bike and yoga. Q: If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? There are notable successful individuals that I wish I’d have the chance to meet. To name a few - Maryam Mirzakhani: Mathematicians and professor at Stanford University, one of the first women honored with numerous remarkable awards (such as the Fields Medal)! Valentina Tereshkova: An astronaut, the first woman to fly in space. Michael Jackson: No need to give an explanation! :) James Watson: Nobel Prize winner who discovered the DNA structure. Meet Jeffery! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: I tutor math, precalculus, physics and chemistry. STEM, Science Technology Engineering Mathematics, courses are my favourite so that is why I like to teach them as well.... Q: Why did you become a tutor? A: I was always tutored when I was young, and my experiences made me realize how helpful this extra support was. I have been a tutor since I entered university, and enjoy contributing to my students’ learning and understanding. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: The best part about teaching is when the student says that the subject they are learning is more interesting than they thought. To have a student enjoy learning is the most intrinsically rewarding part of being a tutor. Q: What is your teaching style? A: I am a more demonstrative teacher where I like to show students how to answer the questions, rather than to tell them how to do so. The best way for a student to understand a concept or question is to go through the thought process themselves, with the support of their tutor. Memorization helps with facts but the the most important component of understanding is whether the student can answer questions on their own. Q: If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? I would like to meet Trump if I had to chance. It would be interesting to see if Trump acts the same way as the persona he shows on TV or on the media. Also who wouldn't want to meet the president of the United States? Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? A: The power I would like to have is to teleport instantly. It would be great if ever anyone needs me, I can instantly go there to help. I would not need to drive or transit and I would also never be late to anything. It would be wonderful to eat breakfast in Hong Kong, lunch in Dubai and dinner in Paris. Teleportation would make life even more interesting and fun. Learn from tutors like Jeffery at Luna Education! Meet Jasmine! Q: What subjects do you tutor? A: English for all grades.... Q: Why did you become an English tutor? A: English has always been my favourite subject, and I’ve always scored high 90s in my English courses. Working with my students from Luna Education has allowed me to further advance my English abilities while continuing my nursing education. Q: What is your favourite part of teaching? A: My favourite thing about tutoring is seeing the joyful expressions on my students’ faces when they truly understand what they have just been taught. As someone who was supported by a tutor throughout high school, I completely understand the rush of happiness you feel when your tutor’s patience and your hard work help you reach your goals. I aim to continue to give the same feeling to my students. Q: What is your teaching style? A: I describe my teaching as the Coaching style. Rather than giving my students the answers, I guide them through each question, step by step, so they are able to complete the questions on their own. The number one goal I have for my students is for them to become independent, so that they can feel confident in themselves and their school work, with or without the guidance of a tutor. The benefit of my teaching style is allowing the student to watch and learn from the teacher, rather than have the instructions told to them. By taking the time to understand the methods of completing their assignments, the students will remember what they are learning for life, and not just for a semester. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I enjoy spending time with my family, especially outdoors, and making many lasting memories to reflect on in the future. "I’ve always had terrible study habits - leaving things until the last minute, or even forgetting that there’s a test. Over the summer, my tutor helped me with coming up with a study schedule for the next school year. We allocated time for studies, and time for other activities. He also gave me a lot of great tips on how to stay focused and be productive. Turns out my tutor doesn’t just help me with questions about school, but was also very helpful in bettering my study habits. - Lucas Yung, Grade 10 Follow Lucas’ footsteps and schedule your summer sessions today! My older cousins always warned me that Grade 8 is really different than elementary school. I was used to having one teacher for all my classes, and having them know me and my study habits personally. The summer before high school, my tutor previewed my grade 8 class materials with me. Being prepared for my classes definitely made my transition to high school a lot easier. - David, Grade 9 Follow David’s footsteps and schedule your summer sessions today! The main reason I’ve consistently gotten A’s in my classes is because I spend every summer previewing material for the next school year. My tutor uses current textbooks and materials to better prepare me for the next year. It has definitely been beneficial to be familiar with the concepts before my teacher even goes over them. - Karen, Grade 11 Follow Karen’s footsteps and schedule your summer sessions today! "It always took me longer than my friends to complete my homework and prepare for my tests. Last summer, my tutor created an a plan just for me.
