Learning is hard, especially when you have a learning disability. But it doesn’t have to be. McElhanney’s Vancouver GIS team is a proud sponsor of this year’s Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School’s (KGMS) Best of Me Gala. KGMS is a non-profit organization in North Vancouver, BC that offers specialized academic programming and personalized instruction for K-12 students with complex learning disabilities. KGMS provides a safe space where kids who have struggled with traditional lea...rning environments can thrive. Although the school’s 200 students are diverse (with 25% being First Nations and Indigenous Peoples), they all have one thing in common they learn differently. Gala attendees will enjoy a catered meal from Canucks Marketplace while participating in silent and live auctions, all from the comfort of home. To learn more about KGMS, register for the gala, or to donate visit: https://kgms.kgms.ca/gala-2021/ #mcelhanney #mcelhanneycares #bestofmegala

For their December 2020 edition, CCE Magazine chose Parks Canada’s Avalanche Detection Network (ADN) at Rogers Pass as their coverstar! The article describes the technologies McElhanney utilized in creating innovative avalanche mitigation solutions on this project some of which you can see in the graphic. The Trans-Canada Highway at Rogers Pass is home to one of the most densely concentrated cluster of avalanche paths in the world, forcing many closures along the highway an...d railway during winter months and endangering local wildlife. Keeping the highway and rail line safely open all season is vital, as the pass is an active trade corridor, with large numbers of goods and travellers regularly crossing the BC / Alberta border. This is a short excerpt from our CEO Allan Russell’s holiday message to all staff: This year, it has been amazing to observe our staff’s resilience and dedication to each other, our clients, and the company. I hope everyone takes the time over the holidays to recharge their batteries, enjoy the outdoors, socialize virtually. Be safe, take care, and here’s to a much brighter 2021!

Tonight is the night! Our Executive VP and General Counsel, Tanya Sadlo, is joining a sleep out in support of the Covenant House Vancouver, a Vancouver-based charity helping homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24. For one night, participants give up their beds in solidarity with those youths, raising donations for Covenant House. Their annual Sleep Out Vancouver event raises about $1M every year, making a big difference in many lives. Tanya says the cause is... close to her heart: When I looked into Covenant House’s work, I saw that their approach to helping homeless youth addresses the root causes of homelessness and helps youth work towards achieving their ambitions. I believe strongly that everyone deserves an opportunity, and helping an organization that supports youth to rise above the challenges and barriers relating to being homeless or transitioning from foster care is a beneficial cause that I am happy to support. Traditionally, the sleep out is in an alley in Vancouver where all the volunteers participate together. This year however, due to COVID-19, the event is virtual and all the participants will sleep outside their own homes.

Are you prepared with basic supplies in case of an emergency? Following a disaster, you may have to stay home with your emergency kit, or leave home with little notice and with only a grab-and-go bag. Once your kit is prepared, be sure that it is kept in a easy-to-reach, accessible place and that everyone in the household knows where it is kept. Keep in mind that the kit should have enough supplies to keep you self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. To learn how to prepare a kit, check out the link at: https://bit.ly/3oU1MmW #SafetyTalk #SafetyTalkThursday #Safety #EmergencyKit #EmergencyPreparedness #BePrepared #McElhanney #HomeSafe #ThinkSafe #WorkSafe

Winter is already here in many parts of the country and it brings us an increased risk of slips and falls. It is important to walk in designated walkways or transition zones to ensure that you are visible to drivers. As the roads can be slippery, be sure to plan ahead and give yourself sufficient time. #SafetyTalk #SafetyTalkThursday #Safety #HomeSafe #WorkSafe #ThinkSafe #McElhanney #WinterPreparedness

Caring for our community means caring for all its residents. Collaborating with the City of Surrey, we replaced the old Bear Creek Bridge, constructed in the 1930s, to accommodate existing and future traffic demands and light rail transit (LRT). In addition, our environmental team stepped up to restore the creek channel below, protecting and improving the local fish habitat. Here’s how: https://www.mcelhanney.com/project/bear-creek-bridge/ We’re proud to have helped the City continue to build a more sustainable future, together. #cityofsurrey #mcelhanney #transportation #infrastructure #bridges #sustainability #environmental

A big congratulations to the City of Revelstoke, BC for the grand opening of the Victoria-4th-Townley Roundabout! McElhanney is proud to have provided civil engineering, landscape architecture, contract administration, and construction inspections for the project. The team also supported the City in acquiring over $5 million in project grant funding. McElhanney’s own Elisa Becker (Civil Engineer of Record) and Jillene Rodgers (Site Inspector) were on site for the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday morning to represent the McElhanney team members who helped make this project a success. Way to go team! #TownleyRoundly #mcelhanney #ribboncutting #cityofrevelstoke

Last month, we announced our 2020 McElhanney Internal Award winners. Today, we’re featuring the winners of our Innovation Award; Melissa Storie and Gary Askeland! Melissa Storie, Bid Coordinator, significantly improved how we share bid opportunities internally. In addition to identifying an automation tool that has eliminated repetitive workflows, Melissa spearheaded the integration of our bids collection system with our Business Management Dashboard, resulting in significan...t time savings company-wide, and allowing for more transparent and strategic bid pursuit decision-making. Gary Askeland, Survey Technician, has given our team the room to grow literally. In 2019, as the Vancouver Engineering Region team expanded, a creative solution was needed to house the team while utilizing the space we had available. Gary took on the job of space planning, supervision of construction, furniture acquisition, and moving of staff, resulting in significant cost savings which otherwise would have gone to external office consultants. Gary’s understanding of our staff’s space needs and passion for creating practical solutions greatly aided office space reorganizations in our Vancouver, Surrey, and Langley offices. McElhanney is passionate about innovating to best support our teams, and to provide the best services to our clients and communities. Congratulations Melissa and Gary; thank you both for your commitment to innovation! #mcelhanney #internalawards #innovation #recognition

We can enjoy our favourite Halloween activities safely by taking some simple precautions. If you are planning to go trick-or-treating, go with your family or cohort, remain in your community, and stay 2 metres apart. When giving out candy, consider using tongs to hand out pre-packaged candy to avoid handling treats. Halloween will be different this year, but we can still keep it safe and fun. Let's all do our part in keeping everyone safe.... #Halloween #HalloweenSafety #Safety #SafetyTalk #SafetyTalkThursday #HomeSafe #ThinkSafe #WorkSafe

We all know the importance of health. Without our health, we are unable to complete even the simplest of our daily tasks and a healthy diet is one of the key components of maintaining our health. Poor diet can cause major health problems such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It can also cause smaller issues that can affect us on a daily basis. Eating poorly can mean increased fatigue and lack of focus which can have a significant impact on performing our tasks safely.... When we are not feeling our best, we put ourselves and others around us at risk. When making food choices, let’s make smarter decisions. Fiber has many positive benefits and even help limit the number of calories our bodies will absorb. Let’s eat heathy to benefit ourselves and our family, but let’s also think how it can positively benefit our performance at work. *Be sure to consult a doctor or nutritionist before making any major diet changes. #Safety #SafetyTalk #SafetyTalkThursday #ThinkSafe #HomeSafe #WorkSafe #EatMoreFiber #EatWell #HealthyDiet

At our very first virtual Internal Awards Celebration last month, Brad Elenko, a Planner at our Penticton branch, won the Community Service Award. This award recognizes employees that have made an impact on their community or industry through significant and extended volunteer activities. Since 2015, Brad has organized McElhanney’s involvement in the Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon Charity Tournament held in Kelowna each year. He coordinated the participation of McElhanney staff from office throughout BC and Alberta and raised thousands of dollars for charity. Thank you and congratulations to Brad, for caring about our communities and empowering our people!
