Life throws us curveballs, things don’t go as planned, unexpected situations arise, you second guess yourself etc. It can all feel like too much some days! There has been a tremendous amount of uncertainty & change and we find ourselves continually adapting & pivoting. The team at MPD, has experienced all of this, especially over the last year and a half. This is the type of space that allowed Misiksk & Deidre to create this design. It is a tangible reminder that, ‘I AM STR...ONG.’ Even in the midst of hard things you can gain strength & guidance by looking inside yourself, to your community, to your ancestors and to Creator. We often find ourselves saying it out loud in our workspace! Speaking, Melkiknai/Melgignai is empowering and we encourage you to try it the next time you or someone around you needs a reminder that, I Am Strong! You can shop our Melkiknai/Melgignai line here https://www.mikmaqprinting.com/collections/melkiknai
One week from today, we are launching a new design You heard it here first, MPD will have Pride design available for purchase!!! Follow along for when it goes live on our website! We are very excited to share more about the creation of the design in the coming days. Stay tuned
September 30th is Orange Shirt Day. On this date, Canadians wear orange to remember Indigenous children who were forced to attend residential schools and to dem...onstrate a commitment to reconciliation. Learn more about Orange Shirt Day at https://www.orangeshirtday.org/ and visit your local library to learn more about the history of residential schools in Canada. In recognition of Orange Shirt Day, we are honoured to share this video of PEI Poet Laureate Julie Pellissier-Lush reading David A. Robertson's "When We Were Alone". This book is available in French and English from our libraries. Our Counselling Services Team is sporting orange shirts created by Mi'kmaq Printing & Design, in support of Orange Shirt Day to raise awareness about the Indige...nous children forced to go to residential schools across Canada. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad, a Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation elder in Williams Lake, B.C. Her first day at a residential school was in 1973 when she was six. Webstad recalls being excited to go to school, and picking out an orange shirt for the occasion. When she arrived at the school, she was stripped of all her clothes, including the orange shirt. The first Orange Shirt Day was marked in Williams Lake, British Columbia, in 2013, and it has grown from there. Thankfully, St. Michael's closed in 1975. The 'Namgis First Nation was given control of the building and it was used for several purposes. In February of 2015, First Nations, church leaders, former students and politicians attended a healing ceremony hosted by the 'Namgis First Nation to mark the demolition of the building. In May of the same year, 'Namgis had a blessing of the Land ceremony. This empty lot isn't empty at all; it's full of stories of pain, fear and anger, that continues to cross generations to this day.
