What Physiotherapists Do Physiotherapists are health care professionals who are trained to provide treatment for people with physical problems arising from an injury, disease, illness or aging. A physiotherapist goal is to help you resume, maintain and promote an active life at home and work. According to Canadian Physiotherapy Association, there are more than 20,000 registered physiotherapists who are working in Canada. These health care professionals work in a variable env...ironment including private clinics, hospitals, schools, community health centers and in the work place. They sometimes work alone or work with other health providers. Many people thought that physiotherapists mainly treat with back and neck pain but there are other more conditions. Physiotherapists can specialize in different areas of practice like musculoskeletal/orthopedic physiotherapy. Examples of conditions being treated are sprains and strains, back pain, arthritis, bursitis, posture problems, sports and workplace injuries and post- surgery conditions. Physiotherapy treatments after a detailed assessment is tailored to suit individuals condition and needs. These might include 1) manual therapies or hands on treatment like joint mobilization or manipulation, manual resistance training and stretching and therapeutic massage to loosen tight muscles 2) exercises like posture re-training, muscle strengthening and stretching programs 3) Electrotherapy use like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), US (ultrasound), IFC (interferential currents) and laser. A home exercise program will also be prescribed in order to attain faster recovery. Above all these, the patients involvement in their own care, through active participation and strict compliance relies the success of the treatment. Most of the time, we see patients coming in for physiotherapy because of pain. Their pain might be of different cause and that means whatever you have, requires different treatment and exercises.
