R.I.P Carla Fracci From Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney : Another extraordinary Italian talent has left us today. Carla Fracci, the most celebrated Italian ballet dancer, has died, age 84. ... She was born in Milan in 1936 and started out at the La Scala Theatre Ballet School at the age of 10, having Russian dancer Vera Volkova among her teachers. The prima ballerina of the Scala for many years and appreciated in all the theaters of the world for her innate talent and elegance was chosen in 1981 prima ballerina at all by the New York Times. Among Fracci’s memorable performances are the romantic and dramatic roles that made her a star around the world as Giselle, La Sylphide, Giulietta, Swanilda, Francesca da Rimini and Medea. She danced with the most illustrious dancers in the world of dance: from the Russians Rudolf Nureyev and Vladimir Vassiliev, through Paolo Bortoluzzi, to the youngest such as Massimo Murru and Roberto Bolle. Dancers Rene and Stela are dancing an early form of son, with particular roots in Danzon. the term... rhumba was created to market the dance and music outside of Cuba, and make it more catchy or lets say more exotic. The music being played in the video is danzon (not mambo). René Rivero Guillén and Ramona Ajón (stage names René and Estela) were a brilliant Afro-Cuban dance team who rose to fame back in the 1930s. Originally from Matanzas, Cuba, the couple later moved to New York City where they appeared regularly at the Havana Madrid Nightclub on Broadway and 51st Street.
