MUN Students' Union 06.07.2021

"CFSNL Chairperson, Katherine McLaughlin says the report is an attack on youth and students in Newfoundland and Labrador." The number of groups speaking out against the recommendations in The Big Reset speaks volumes to the problems with them, and makes it clear the government tasked the wrong people to write the report. A coalition of community groups that deliver services and actually represent people would have come up with way better recommendations, but government chose to put millionaires in charge with figuring out what's best for the people of the province. And that has never worked for us.

This is the second report in a week that is recommending the systemic dismantling of the high-quality system of accessible post-secondary education in NL that attracts students from around the country and around the world. When you hire the rich to make recommendations on public services their recommendations will not consider the quality of the service delivered and they will not consider what's needed for equitable access to those services for all classes. The Big Reset f...Continue reading

Tuition fees must not go up at MUN. The cost of gambling with this social experiment far outweigh any perceived benefits. Dr. Timmons' failure to acknowledge a decrease in enrollment will happen if fees increase, something history in NL has taught us, is not a justification to increase fees. Her comments regarding enrollment being unaffected at other universities that have higher fees is a complete failure to recognize the other barriers students face when coming to Memorial...Continue reading

High-quality, well-funded, and accessible post-secondary education is integral to our future, and it is within the power of our government to not foist more difficulty on already struggling students. Average student debt in Newfoundland and Labrador is roughly $20,000 for a 4-year program at MUN, and that is with tuition frozen for students from NL. That figure will surely skyrocket, just as it did the last time the province allowed tuition fees to increase in the 1990s when ...tuition fees rose 151%, and soaring student debt combined with a crippled economy following the cod moratorium led to a surge in youth outmigration. Student debt is an enormous barrier for young people looking to start families, make major purchases like homes, appliances and cars, and prevents many young people from realizing their dreams of starting their own business. Financial barriers are also the single greatest barrier cited by young people who do not attend college or university. Show your support for students and vote to keep the freeze, below. #EducationForAll #KeepTheFreeze
