"Shamrock" is wishing you all a GREAT DAY!
Looking for a ride for 2 rabbits (not wildlife) from Terrace to Smithers if anyone has room please.
Bear Cub # 8 arrived at NLWS yesterday. We went from 2 to 8 cubs in a matter of 48 hours. Looks like our busy season arrived a bit earlier than usual. "Scree" (so named by the attending Conservation Officers for the area he was found, a mass of small loose stones that covered a slope above a raging river, so you can imagine it was a bit of a tense rescue) is a little male that weight in at 2000g or 4.4 lb. He will join the other cubs for company as soon as possible, but we need to ensure first that he is healthy and eating well. Please consider a donation to help care for our 8 cubs and porcupette, all require special milk formula right now. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/m/61905/donation
We are impressed how many of you identified "Cuddles" correctly as a porcupine. Baby porcupines are called porcupettes. Female porcupines typically only give birth to one porcupette each summer. These little baby porcupines are about ten inches long. Also, they have teeth and are ready to start eating and walking normally.
We have a new arrival, do you know what it is?

Many of you have asked and here it is our 2021 Calendar! Follow the link to our webpage to place your order and we will contact you with postal costs and payment options. https://www.wildlifeshelter.com/p/nlws-calendar-gift.html
Our newest arrival " Kiki" is truly enjoing the room services. Finally given some secure place she is resting body and mind while replenishing her strength with some good food.
This is the sound of happy bear cubs! :)
It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of our friend and fellow rehabber Guenther Golina. Please consider helping out with this Fundraiser as a great way to honor his legacy of loving wildlife! https://gf.me/u/y84b7v
A HUGE THANK YOU TO Fabulous Cakes by Jenn and Admiral Roofing for their incredible Fundraising efforts! We are so awed by their success and promise to put it all to good use helping wildlife in need. Also a BIG THANK you to those that purchased cupcakes for our Volunteers and Staff, that was a really sweet surprise!
Rescue of cub #37 accomplished. The little girl had been reported along highway 37 around km 183. For those of you that don't know the area that's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Rescues like this are always unpredictable as there is no one around to monitor. However we got lucky and not only found her, but actually caught her pretty quickly. She was soooo hungry. She only weighs 25lb.
Today is NLWS Founder Peter Langen's Birthday. Let's celebrate the man who has done so much to give wildlife a second chance! https://www.magisto.com/video/O08fMkgEBSFvWAxiCzE
Today is Peter's Birthday! Without him there would be no NLWS. Happy Birthday to a wonderful, compassionate and caring man that gave so many animals a second chance!
Help us name the Grizzly triplets!
Last night Peter & Angelika returned with 2 female grizzly cubs from Bella Coola. It was a race against bad weather, but all are safe here now. This will be a longer post, but we feel an important one and we encourage you to read it completely before leaving comments. As we drove into the Valley, we were appaled to see (despite snow on the ground) still trees full of apples and unsecured chickens, other small livestock, garbage and birdfeeders. It seems like people are delib...erately setting bears up for failure by providing food and then complaining about safety hazards because the bears come around to feed on the provided smorgasbord. This needs to change!!! No bear should lose it's life do to human failure to coexist. Conservation Officers have strict guidelines to protect public saftey and have little room there to help the wildlife. We learned that if a property is in an agriculture area most enforcement tools are exempt. How can that be? Is a farmer less responsible for coexisting? We think not, if at all (as a farmer ourselves) we have bigger responsibilities as we are sharing more space. NLWS has always remained apolitical to ensure all parties feel safe to call in for a rescue no matter the blame. Now we feel increasingly part of the problem by not pointing out the real killers that take lives not by their own hands, but by hiding behind antequated regulations and policies. We have a reelected government that now has 4 years to make a lasting difference. It is time to step up and do what's right. We all deserve to live on this beautiful planet people and animals alike, lets make rewilding wildlife a need of true accidents and not the result of human indifference. Thank you for your support and taking the time to read this. The NLWS Team See more
Remember a few days ago we asked for transport help for a owl in need? Well with some good food this little one is making a quick recovery.
Our bears are missing the call of "Hibernation" and instead are wrangling and running in the snow! :)
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday. Peter and Angelika are on another rescue mission so please be patient with calendar orders, we get to it as soon as possible.
First snow and our charges are just like kids. :)
Apparently we missed the "Submit" button on the calendar order form. If you filled it out already Please try again. Sorry for the oversight!
It’s not a call we get too often but a bear cub that found itself stuck in a tree had a little help from a CO to get free. In #PortAlberni, CO’s responded to a... report of someone hearing what they thought was a bear cub crying out from the same spot. The noise was coming from an area surrounded by tall grass and thick underbrush. The cub had somehow wedged its leg into the crook of a tree and was unable to free itself. CO’s believe the cub had tried to climb the thin tree, slipped, and its leg became pinched between the trunks of two small trees. A sow was seen pacing around the immediate area. CO’s carefully tranquilized the cub while hazing the sow away just enough for an officer to be able to get to the cub, free its leg and make sure it was not injured. The cub was tagged and left in a safe position so the sow could protect it while it recovered #BCCOS See more
Heidi is convinced winter is just around the corner!
Our 3 new arrivals have settled down and have a healthy appetite.
OWL ARRIVED AT NLWS THANK YOU! Help needed injured owl in Kitimat needs transportation to Smithers. Anyone going our way?
We would like to start, once again, with a heartfelt Thank you to all our supporters. Having a safe vehicle and great transport boxes made this recent rescue possible. The call came on Saturday with 3 grizzly Cubs orphaned in Bella Coola. Our amazing team got Tanja & Angelika on the road in record time and covered all the necessary preparations at home. Driving conditions were less then favorable with the first heavy onset of winter. The usual 14hr drive(one way) turned out ...to be much longer. Arriving in Bella Coola on Sunday at 2pm all 3 Cubs were in the care of CO Hanna Anderson. Hanna relayed the sad story: Early Saturday morning she and CO Steve Hodgson attended a complaint of a grizzly attacking a house. The female and her Cubs had no history of being trouble and the CO's worked on getting her hazed out of the highly public area. Everything seemed to be working fine when all of a sudden the sow charged out of the bush right into the side of the driving CO truck. The sow sustained fatal injuries and the CO's had no choice than to euthanize her. Capture of the now orphaned Cubs was made extremely difficult by uncooperative onlookers and almost left one cub unrescued. Only the CO's perseverance saved her life. This is a typical situation of human carelessness: attracted by fish guts and agitated by none bear safe human behavior cost a good sow her life and further jeopardized their cubs' lives. With all the education out there, there is no excuse for such sad events. People have to wake up and behave respectful and responsible and we will have wildlife around for future generations to enjoy. A black bear cub captured by CO's in Prince George will join trip home. We are so grateful for all the CO support. See more
Another great Fundraiser. We are so grateful in all the innovative ways people come to the aid of wildlife in need. Thank you so very much!
