A huge thank you to Darcy Spidle/Chik White for donating a portion of his 2020 digital album sales to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust! He put out two beautiful nature recordings last year, Atlantic Ocean Recordings 2020 and Northern Spring Peepers, and we are so thankful to benefit from his talent! https://darcyspidle.com

Nova Scotia's Dusan Soudek recently donated a 25-hectare parcel of land near Head of Jeddore on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore to the province. He made the donation to mark his 50th anniversary of immigrating to Canada after his family fled Czechoslovakia. Soudek said he hopes his donation might inspire other Nova Scotia nature lovers to donate coastal or waterfront land to the province, the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.... "I thought it should be public. And now it is, so I'm a happy camper." www.cbc.ca//nova-scotia-man-land-donation-eastern-shore-1.

In November, the Nature Trust put out a request for a canoe, since many of our properties are on islands or have wetlands or are easier to access by water, and sometimes it has been a challenge to visit as often as we would like. Our Stewardship Coordinator, Joanna, was completely taken aback to discover not one, but SIX offers of canoes, and , as a result of the generosity of those kind people, we were able to choose a canoe that will suit our needs. Melanie Dobson and G...raeme Rocker donated their 16’ Nova Craft Prospector canoe. It’s been well loved by them and will now have a second life helping the Nature Trust manage and care for its lands. Already feeling quite cheerful by the news of the new-to-us canoe, Joanna went shopping for supplies to transport it, and the good people at Old Creel Canoe and Kayak not only dug out what they had available in the off season, they donated foam blocks and a set of tie-downs for the canoe, leaving Joanna speechless for the second time in a week! We could not do what we do without the support of people like Melanie and Graeme and businesses like Old Creel Canoe & Kayak. Thank you for making this possible for us!

One of the real challenges in stewarding offshore islands is accessing them. The Nature Trust doesn't own a boat and relies on the generosity of volunteers like Thom Drew, who cheerfully ferried us to and from our field site, as well as joined us for a day in the field, earlier this past week. Volunteers like Thom also provide a wealth of local knowledge, which is so essential in helping to determine how to best monitor and care for the land into the future. It’s a bonus when they have some salty sea dogs to join in the ride! Field season is starting to wind down, and we want to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who loaned us their time, boats and expertise this season.
