On Tuesday November 3rd, first year student Lutie Kaviok from Arviat caught his first polar bear. He drew a tag and travelled on the land with his Father and Great-Uncle. They guided him through the ice and shared traditional knowledge with him, on how to skin the bear. Lutie described the experience as "exciting"; and explained that he felt very connected and trusting of the land. The bear was close to 7 ft in length. We are so proud of you Lutie! Ajungi!"
On Monday November 2nd we were thrilled to have Nancy Karetak Lindell speak to the first year class. Currently students are studying levels of government; and Nancy spoke about her experience as Nunavut's first Member of Parliament. Ma'na Nancy for sharing your journey with us!
Today the President of NTI, Aluki Kotierk spoke with first years in Iqaluit as well as virtually to students across the territory. She spoke with passion about issues affecting Nunavummiut and current events. As always, Aluki inspired students to reach for their goals and find their purpose. Qujannamik!
This morning Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed spoke to the first year class. He encouraged students to enjoy learning about themselves, their space and identity. He also spoke about his role and the work that ITK is doing. Nakkumek Natan!
Last week, students took a break from academics to focus on cultural learning. Across the territory, students participated in different activities such as beading, crocheting, working with skins, singing, lighting a qulliq and practicing Inuit games. Thank you to the community liasons and NS alumni who helped organize.
