Coast Guard entering Owen Sound Harbour! We spotted this ship late November. Looks like it's the CCGS Samuel Risley, an ice breaker and buoy tender based in Parry Sound! Looks small from up here, but she's actually 70m (229ft) long!
Blue sky Blues: When the weather is beautiful, but you can’t get the aircraft out of the hangar...this is gonna take a while
Fill me up, Buttercup... Griffon 448 conducting training manouvers today, getting some fuel from the Owen Sound Airport before making their way back to CFB Borden. Payload: 10 Troops or 6 Stretchers... Max Speed : 260km/hr See more
High above Cape Croker in the fall! MacGregor Harbour is on the right and the three islands near Big Bay in the distance, Hay island is the closest.
Lots of Pilatus PC-12s coming and going this summer. This one came in from Air Bravo, piloted by a prior student and Flight Instructor at OSFS. Air Bravo is a truly international carrier which charters anywhere in North America and the Caribbean!
Clouds rolling in! We saw this extensive layer of clouds moving down the peninsula on our training flight this evening. Beautiful sunshine 5,000 feet over the bay while things get dark in the city!
Orange sky at 11am! A couple weeks ago over Owen Sound Airport. Overcast clouds are blocking much of the light, but clear skies in the GTA are silhouetting wind turbines 60km away near Dundalk! The orange colour comes from Rayleigh scattering of distant light, like a sunset at noon!
Old Baldy is going bald! Some leaves came off in the thunderstorms a few days ago. We're taking in some of the last colours on our fly-by!
Welcome back Chi-Chi! We spotted the Big Canoe back in the harbor yesterday on our fly-by. Bridge looks almost done compared to last time Chicheemaun was home.
Flew by the Grotto while it was still closed back in June. Eerie, but also nice to see such a popular destination back to its natural uninhabited form. From above you can see much of the underwater caves and rock formations, super clear water!
Jumpers Away! Our friends in the Hercules were back today doing some exercises. A quick landing to pick them up and blast off again, always an awesome sight to see! The Owen Sound Airport playing a supportive role in the infrastructure needed to train the amazing women and men of our armed forces.
Batten down the hatches! If you're anywhere in southern Ontario you've likely seen, and heard the severe thunderstorms moving through today. This massive Cold Front extends 2500KM down to Houston Texas right now! Over 200 lightning strikes per minute! lightningmaps.org
Late Fall in O-S Vibrant colours may be fading a little, but on a blue sky day this area looks as beautiful as ever. What a place to call home! Thx to our student Murray for capturing this great shot :) Nice to take a short break from learning to fly to take it all in!
Home for Thanksgiving. Usually this Cessna Citation Sovereign lands in Wiarton, but with that airport closed for repairs, she made a smooth landing in Owen Sound this morning. A very capable charter jet, with a range of ~6000km and cruise speed of 850km/hr at 47,000 feet! Zoom
Indian Fall...s Water levels are high and Indian Falls was rushing when we flew by yesterday, an uncommon but pretty sight during the fall season! Sure doesn't look like it's 15 metres tall from up here!
Look out below! Today we spotted this section of rock that has recently fallen from the cliff face at Lion's Head. If you look really close you may be able to spot some hikers standing on a nearby lookout!
Tiger Squadron C-130 visits Owen Sound for Search and Rescue parachute training. At 40 meters long, the Hercules' wingspan is bigger than the airport terminal building! Despite this they are always very accomodating of our little cessnas, and sharing the airport resources.
Fall Colours in full swing! We snapped this pic at the Slough of Despond yesterday, just down the escarpment from Skinner's Bluff.
A 6-year old went missing on Sept 22, #OPPAviation spotted him in a wooded area and directed #OPP Emergency Response Team to his location who found him in good health. Great work by #OPPCanine, #SouthBrucePeninsula and #SaugeenFirstNation Fire. Special thanks to @OPPComissioner Thomas Carrique for the post. Amazing work everyone, wow! Helicopters with Night Vision and Infra Red and a well trained crew for the win.
Life saving patient transfer just departed the Owen Sound airport. When minutes matter the ability to refuel at CYOS while preparing to load a patient can be vital to the mission, that was just the case this morning. Glad to have an airport a few minute drive from the hospital.
Congrats Brad W. on your first solo flight! Your hard work has paid off, and all of us at OSFS are proud! Onward and upwards!
Lets play another game of Name That Lake! This lake and small town & harbour is a little outside of our normal back yard, at almost 100 miles away from Owen Sound! Post your guesses in the comments, we'll post the answer soon.
Meet helicopter pilot & flight instrucor Sgt. Scott Ross with the OPP. Monday Scott was busy at work assisting with the search for a swimmer in distress at Sauble Beach. He stopped in twice for fuel at the Owen Sound Airport while carrying out his critical mission. Fly Safe!
