During crises like this pandemic, women face increased risk of violence, loss of livelihoods, and other threats. Now, more than ever, we need to support and loo...k out for people experiencing gender-based violence, even as we keep apart. Here are six ways you can take action to make BC a safer, fairer, and more equal place for everyone. 1. Support and believe survivors. Believing people when they talk about their experiences shows your friends and family you can be trusted to support them. 2. Learn the signs of abuse and how to help. People in BC experiencing violence can access VictimLink, a toll-free, confidential multilingual service available 24/7 by calling or texting 1-800-563-0808 or emailing [email protected] 3. Understand and practice consent. Consent is the basis of healthy and respectful relationships, whether or not they involve sex. 4. Learn to recognize sexism and transphobia. Stereotypes like "boys don't cry" can harm people and keep them from getting help. 5. Reject victim-blaming. It doesn’t matter what you wear or where you are: everyone deserves safety from violence. 6. Start conversations with friends and family. Often people are afraid to talk about negative things that happen. Talking openly about gender-based violence can help people realize that they are not alone and that help is available. On this day and every day, we remember those who have been killed by transphobia and affirm our commitment to building a province where trans, non-binary and Tw...o-Spirit people can safely live their lives, affirmed in who they are. Let’s support our friends, neighbours and family members. And let’s reach out for support when we need it.

Today we celebrate the youth in our lives and encourage everyone to get to know your loved ones. A book we have found helpful is The Teenage Brain by Frances Jensen. It’s an easy read and offers helpful and valuable insight into parenting and supporting young people.

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. There is often a belief that this is not something that happens in our community. Our CRED program reports an alarmingly high number of youth being exploited right here. Often parents are unaware it’s taking place. If you would like to know more about this issue please contact our intake counsellor to connect you with our CRED team. And in the meantime, let’s keep talking to our children, look out for changes in behaviour and remember social media and online video games are a portal for predators to access our children and youth.

We would like to thank all who attended PCFSA’s 52nd Annual General Meeting. 2020 has been an interesting year and it has resulted in a Zoom AGM. While very different than any other AGM we’ve had in the past it was still successful. Thank you to our Board and staff and a very special thank you to Elder Shirley Alphonse for the beautiful opening blessing. We’d also like to announce Liz Nelson and Jen Munro as our Interim Co-Executive Directors. We look forward to their leadership and our continued service to our community.
