That has prompted some landlords to offer incentives and to loosen bans on pets, say those who work in the sector. So many people are getting cats and dogs now [in the pandemic] and the rental market is trying to adapt, said Paula Azevado, business development co-ordinator for liv.rent, a platform that manages landlord-tenant connections. She said landlords of larger operations are also offering incentives like free parking, a first month of rent free, or discounted rent for the first four months in some markets.

In 2017 and 2018, over 10,000 BC residents called for the government to change the Residential Tenancy Act to end discrimination against tenants and condo owners with pets in B.C.. In response, the government failed to take action and disregarded our policy recommendations to follow the example of Ontario's 30 years of having pet friendly housing policy that works for both landlords and tenants. We are now in another provincial election and the issue for thousands of BC re...sidents remains the same: they are unable to find affordable and safe pet friendly housing in their communities. That is why Pets OK BC is asking our followers across the province to reach out to their local candidates and ask them if they will support Pets OK BC's policy recommendations for pet friendly housing. Tell them that it is an election issue for you and will influence who they vote for. If you have a personal experience with this issue share that with them too, so they know about the real consequences of pet discrimination in housing. You can also send them a link to our full report here, so they know the fact vs the myths: http://petsok.ca/policyreport2018/ Here is a link to all the candidates in each riding for the 2020 provincial election: https://elections.bc.ca//provincial-candid/candidate-list/ See more

A city councillor in Port Moody, Amy Lubik Port Moody City Councillor has passed a motion to advocate for changes to the Residential Tenancy Act that would stop pet discrimination. The hope is that the motion will make its way to Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) which is where municipalities make their asks of the province. Of course, we know that there is opposition from Landlords BC to these changes and that the provincial government failed to amend the RTA regulations, ignoring the plight of tens of thousands of British Columbians and their pets. The fight is not over though and with a provincial election around the corner, it may be time to pressure the government again. https://globalnews.ca//port-moody-tenancy-act-changes-pet/

1. Your ability to have a pet If you’re looking for a new rented property and want to bring your dog or cat with you, you might have a struggle on your hands. Blanket bans on pets are unenforceable by landlords under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and landlords must not unreasonably refuse permission to their tenants. This could include where the landlord believes the animal may cause damage, the property isn’t suitable for the type of pet, or there are leasehold restrictions.... Even so, only 7% of landlords are reported to offer pet-friendly properties. One of the top concerns from landlords is the increased risk of damage pets may present to properties. However, the Dogs Trust suggests that pet owners are generally more responsible tenants and are more likely to want to stay in the property for longer. Research has also shown that pets have a beneficial effect on the psychological wellbeing of their owners so efforts to ensure tenants can have control over this vital aspect of their lives should be welcomed. The government is planning to rewrite the model tenancy agreement to support more renters to have well behaved pets. However, this places no new legal duty on private landlords to allow tenants to have pets and with landlords still able to veto any request for pets, this is unlikely to have much effect. There is some positive news, though: some corporate landlords in the evolving build-to-rent sector are responding to consumer demand and looking to stand out from the crowd by offering pet-friendly tenancies. (Please note this article is from the United Kingdom. The provincial government is not doing anything to help renters with pets. Have you called John Horgan to ask him to change pets in rentals yet?)

But today (January 4), Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has called on landlords to make it easier for responsible tenants to have well behaved pets in their homes. MP Robert Jenrick announced an overhaul to the model tenant contracts earlier today, with pets at the heart. His calls came as figures show more young people and families than ever before are renting.... He said they should be able to enjoy the happiness that a pet can bring into their lives.

No mention of women dealing with abusive relationships with pets... John Horgan, are you aware that University of Windsor, has found that 89 percent of women in abusive relationships reported that their partners had also abused their petsand more than half of the women had delayed fleeing because they didn’t want to leave their pets in danger? I think we should let him know about women staying in abusive relationships because they can’t find housing for them and their pet(s).... Let him know this needs to change! What the Housing Crisis does to Four-legged Family Members Kamloops continues to feel the pinch of the affordable housing crisis. And caught up in that crisis a...re our most vulnerable community members and their pets. Two years ago, when Four Paws Food Bank, based in Kamloops, began operating their volunteers handed out free pet food to Salvation Army clients once a week. The goal was to connect with people and raise the level of care their pets may be getting and to help them hang on to their pets through rough times, hopefully keeping that pet out of a shelter. Now, Four Paws supports multiple agencies who allow marginalized clients to keep their pets in shelters with them, runs the Pet Food Bank in Kamloops and supplies some of the smaller outlying communties with food as well. The need has grown faster than we can grow with it. Over 15% of people living on the street have become homeless while caring for a pet. Over 50% of our clients are seniors Most of our clients need supports for 3 months or more while they stabilize their housing situation. In addition to these services they pay for veterinary care and vaccinations for clients of social service agencies so that their pets are allowed into longer term housing with them. Four Paws is gearing up for the cold weather and opening of the seasonal shelters and needs your help. Donations of all kinds of pet food are now being gratefully accepted. If you can help out with our food drive we would be most appreciative. Our goal is 10,000 lbs of food in 2 weeks. Please see our event for details. If you can't donate, please share. Thank you....
