In this time of uncertainty there are many things that we hold deeply to our hearts. One of the most important things is our family and children from the day they are born to the day they leave our homes. That is why this summer is one of the most important summers to protect the people who are the closest to us. Protecting your children this summer is something that you want to get off your mind with so many other problems we are facing at this time. Choosing the right bug r...epellant to protect your family is one easy step to ease the mind. When selecting repellents for infants and children you want to be certain that the repellent you are using is safe for your infants. Young children especially babies have very soft and sensitive skin that can react to harsh chemicals in some traditional insect repellents. That’s why we offer a line of DEET free (as always) products PiACTIVE insect repellents. The great thing about PiACTIVE is, it can be used on infants 6 months and older. PiACTIVE has the longest protection available in Canada, up to 12 hours of protection from mosquitos and ticks and up to 10 hours protection from black flies. Our formula is non-scented, non-greasy, non-oily and not sticky. Piactive is skin friendly and dermatologically tested. Unlike DEET based products PiACTIVE will not damage most synthetic materials including garments made of polyester, rayon, spandex, nylon, lycra, and cotton. Check out our website for more details at www.PiACTIVE.com. See more

Were ticks used as biological weapons? Lawmaker Chris Smith suggests the US government turned ticks into bioweapons and may have released them leading to the spread of Lyme disease. Republican congressman Chris Smith proposed an amendment instructing the defence department’s inspector general to review if ticks were used as a biological weapon between 1950 and 1975. ... One of the main motivations for Smith’s proposed amendment was a book written by Stanford science writer and former Lyme sufferer Kris Newby. He cites Willy Burgdorfer, the discoverer of the Lyme pathogen, as saying that Lyme disease was a military experiment that had gone wrong. Burgdorfer said that he was given the task of breeding ticks and other blood-sucking insects and then infecting them with pathogens that cause human diseases. According to Smith, interviews combined with access to Dr. Burgdorfer’s lab files reveal that he and other bioweapons specialists stuffed ticks with pathogens to cause severe disability, disease, even death to potential enemies. (https://chrissmith.house.gov//2019-07-11_final_ndaa_lyme_i) The book suggested that there were plans in place to drop weaponized ticks and other bugs from the air. Uninfected bugs were released in residential areas to trace how they spread, according to the book. It suggests that something could have gone wrong during the experiment and led to the outbreak of Lyme disease in the US. FULL ARTICLE: https://www.theguardian.com//pentagon-review-weaponised-ti

Great customer review from Rob! "My camp is on a swamp in Northern Ontario. The blackflies and mosquitos are probably the one of the areas that has a huge population of both. I have tested most repellants and prior to Piactive I have found D-15 by Amway to be the most pleasant effective repellant on the market. I find Piactive is the best repellant I have used BY FAR!!!!!!... This year I gave them out to my friends and relatives as gifts. I promote Piactive to everyone!! And have received many hugs from the people that have tried it including one of the Home Hardware local managers here in Sudbury. On another note, I have been using Mosquito Shield coils for years and currently there is not a better one on the market. The odor is like a nice incense smell and it is deadly to them."

Larger than average volumes of mosquitoes are expected this summer. David Beresford, entomology professor at Trent University, says that mosquito eggs are expected to hatch within the next couple weeks meaning the mosquitoes will be at their worst in the month of June. Beresford said that the last 3 or 4 years have been fairly dry compared with 2019. "When the snow melted the last few years, the ground was frozen," said Beresford. "The melt water ran off into the canals and r...ivers. So there wasn't as much standing water on the ground for mosquitoes. We got off pretty lucky actually." (https://www.cbc.ca//wi/mosquito-season-june-2019-1.5174809) This year, however, has seen consistent rainfall in southern Ontario making the conditions perfect for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. With high levels of rainfall this spring, the mosquitoes have more of an opportunity to lay their eggs. Puddles are an especially attractive area for mosquitoes. To prevent stagnant water from accumulating, public health inspector Wanda Tonus recommends: Dumping stagnant water that may be sitting in your wheelbarrows, toys, and any other object in which water may accumulate Changing the water in your birdbaths every couple of days to prevent the insects from breeding nearby. To minimize the chance of getting bitten, Tonus says to: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and long socks Wear insect repellents An increase in mosquito population could cause an increase in West Nile virus cases, which spreads when mosquitoes feed on infected birds. The major types of mosquitoes found in Ontario that carry diseases and/or are of major annoyance to humans are: Culex Aedes Ochlerotatus Coquillettidia Spring Aedes group & Ochlerotatus Annoying to humans and can carry disease to humans & heartworm to dogs Adults emerge late April to late July Painful persistent biters Attack during daylight hours, not at night Summer Aedes group Annoyance to humans, carry heartworms to dogs Biting activity from June to September Culex Annoyance to mammals including humans Carries diseases such as WNV (West Nile virus) to humans Biting activity worst in July and early August Painful persistent bites Attack at dusk and after dark KUUS Inc. carries PiACTIVE (DEET-FREE as always) & Mosquito Shield (DEET based) insect repellents. Director of Public Health Risk Sciences warns due to climate change ticks are spreading across Canada. This will mean an increase of Lyme Disease. According to Nick Ogden, the director of public health risk sciences, the tick population continues to expand; Lyme disease cases increased from 144 in 2009 to 2,025 in 2017. Ticks are moving between 35-55 km per year. Now people in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and all of Nova Scotia are at risk of Lyme’s Disease. The n...ew Lyme disease risk areas: In Ontario Thunder Bay, Peel region, Ottawa area (has high percentage of ticks carrying the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease) In Quebec Gatineau and southwest parts of Outaouais, northwest of Estrie region, parts of Montérégie, southwest of Mauricie and Centre-du-Quebec. In Manitoba southern part of province such as, Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk and Sprague. In New Brunswick counties around Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton. In Nova Scotia entire province. Prevention:(1)(2) - Ticks are mostly found in wooded areas. Be vigilant in doing a body check after being in the woods (check from head to toeticks love getting to the hard to see and reach body areas your cracks and crevices). - Wear light coloured clothing to help see any ticks that have hitched onto your clothing. - Wear tick repellent, such as, PiACTIVE (DEET FREE, as always) and Mosquito Shield Insect Repellents (for ticks, mosquitoes and black flies) containing DEET. - Don’t forget to check your clothing for ticks. Signs and symptoms:(1)(2) - Ticks have an anesthetic therefore you won’t feel them when they start to have their blood meal - An early sign is an expanding red rash or bullseye on skin which usually starts 3 to 30 days after you have been bitten by an infected blacklegged tick. - Early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes.
