Each year, Veterans Affairs Canada invites Canadian schools, individuals and organizations to make Valentines for Vets. VAC then distributes the valentines to Veterans in long-term care facilities across the country by February 14. Last year VAC sent almost 17,000 valentines to more than 4,700 veterans, says Ben Ouellette, Dir DSRM and Acting Dir PSP Ops. In 2020 PSP Recreation participants across the country made cards, but with this year’s restrictions we may not be ...able to craft together, so we want to spread the word about this initiative as wide as possible. If you would like to send a valentine thanking a Veteran, please send it by February 1 to: Valentines for Vets Veterans Affairs Canada Commemoration, Distribution Unit 125 Maple Hills Avenue Charlottetown, PE C1C 0B6 If open, you can also drop off your valentine to your local PSP staff at the gym or community centre by Jan 21, 2021. https://www.veterans.gc.ca//classr/valentines-for-veterans

Welcome to the newest member of 4 Wing Cold Lake’s Fitness and Sports team, Ms. Sarah Barber! Sarah has assumed the role of 4 Wing’s Reconditioning Specialist, in the absence of Gabriel Quenneville who has been seconded to Europe for the next 3 to 4 years in the role of Fitness, Sports and Physical Exercise Coordinator. Sarah has joined our team with very strong credentials and experience. Specifically, Sarah attained her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology-Athletic Therapy fro...m the University of Manitoba and her Masters of Kinesiology from the University of Calgary. In addition she holds current certifications as an Athletic Therapist (Canadian Athletic Therapist Association), Exercise Physiologist (Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology), Emergency Medical Responder (Alberta College of Paramedics) and Health Care Provider CPR (Canadian Red Cross). Add to this the experience she has gained working for the University of Calgary in various positions (including the Rehab and Fitness Program Coordinator and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the U of C Dinos Track Team) and you can easily appreciate how excited we are to have Sarah join our team. And that’s not all! Sarah has also worked as an Advanced Aquatics/First Aid Instructor and Lifeguard, Adult Programs Supervisor, and as a Wellness Coordinator for the YMCA and as a Lab Instructor at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Calgary. For someone so young, she brings a lot to the table! With these impressive credentials, it’s hard to believe Sarah has a life outside of work, but she does report that her hobbies include cycling, swimming, climbing, baking, and working with youth sports. Welcome aboard Sarah! 4 Wing Connection

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. This year, children from military families will connect virtually to support to their CAF parents and all that they do to protect children's rights around the world. https://www.cafconnection.ca//World/Our-Shining-Stars.aspx... On Remembrance Day, Bud explains to Komak that Veterans want Canadians to understand the price of freedom. They are passing the torch to all of us, so the memory of their sacrifices will continue, and the values they fought for will live on in all of us. The two new friends promise to always remember. Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today we share this DIY artwork that can hang in your home and serve as a reminder all year long. Note the template will be in the comments below.

Bud and Komak pause to remember a recent hero. Born in Jamaica, Mark Graham moved to Hamilton, Ontario with his family as a child. An exceptional athlete, he was a member of the Canadian 4 x 400 metre relay team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. In 2004, he answered the call to serve in the cause of peace and freedom and enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. Private Graham was sent to Afghanistan with the Royal Canadian Regiment. The 33-year old was killed by ‘...friendly fire’ on September 4, 2006, when his platoon was mistakenly attacked by an American warplane during an operation to capture a Taliban stronghold west of Kandahar. Graham is buried at the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa.
