Today’s Meet the Artist Monday post is an introduction to Laura Hale. Hale is one of 20 Prairie artists currently featured in borderLINE at Remai Modern. Based in Saskatoon, Hale trained at the University of Regina and Emily Carr University in Vancouver. She also worked as a head of props in professional theatre, an experience that led to her interest in exploring a wide range of materials, sourcing and use of local resources, collaboration, storytelling, the handmade, public... art, and installation art. Her work in borderLINE, Fringe, is a delicate chain-link fence made of synthetic human hair. The piece speaks to the way fences function as protection by controlling that territory, both to keep out or keep in. The fragility of the materials emphasizes the symbolic function of barriers, whether real or psychological, in the formation of safety. See more

Have you visited Remai Modern’s latest Picasso exhibition yet? Picasso Linocuts: Drawing in Colour is a special show guest curated by the person who helped get these important works to Saskatoon in the first place. Frederick Mulder, along with his associate Anne-Françoise Gavanon, chose the works currently on display, which highlight Picasso’s collaboration with printer Hidalgo Arnéra. Mulder is a London-based art dealer but his roots are in Eston, Saskatchewan. He assembled ...Remai Modern’s Picasso linocut collection. In 2012, 405 of these works were purchased and donated to the museum by the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation. In 2014, Mulder made a gift of 23 ceramics (some of which are also currently on display) along with one of the remaining four linocut subjects bringing the linocut collection to a total of 406 works. https://remaimodern.org//e/pablo-picasso-drawing-in-colour

"This is a story about how we could save the planet, how we might liberate all creatures. It’s a bold statement and even as these words leave my body, I lack confidence, but now is not the time for fear." We've just added the complete script of Zadie Xa's immersive multimedia installation Moon Poetics 4 Courageous Earth Critters and Dangerous Day Dreamers to Remai Modern's Field Page. Visit to read the entire story of animal kinship as a survival strategy to save an ailing p...lanet as told by the Conch Shell, Seagull, Cabbage, Fox, Orca and Narrator. Experience the exhibition in-person at Remai Modern until February 24 in the Connect Gallery which is always free thanks to the generosity of TD! https://remaimodern.org//moon-poetics-4-courageous-earth-c

This Friday, you are invited to participate in a live activation of Nurgül Rodriguez's Out of Place from 6-9 PM. Presented as part of the exhibition borderLINE, Rodriguez's project asks participants to answer a question from the Canadian Citizenship Guide in exchange for a ceramic cup. A correct answer isn’t required, but the artist hopes the experience causes visitors to consider their own knowledge of the country’s history and empathize with the immigration experience. During the opening weekend of borderLINE, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to document the public engagement with Rodriguez's piece. Watch the video below to learn more about this dynamic, socially engaged project. https://www.facebook.com/318533651515017/videos/369945640768514

Today’s Meet the Artist Monday post is an introduction to Nurgül Rodriguez, one of the artists featured in borderLINE, now on view at Remai Modern. Rodriguez settled in Calgary in 2009, after nomadic years of living in Turkey, the U.S. and Spain with her family. She has an active practice that includes porcelain, installation, handmade paper, printmaking, three-dimensional pieces and, more recently, socially engaged and collaborative projects. She posits that spaces for art c...an provide opportunities to develop shared experiences and build community. This is precisely the intention behind her work for borderLINE. Out of Place is an expansive installation comprised of 1,095 porcelain cups. For Rodriguez, the work represents the removal of bureaucratic borders in her navigation of the world. In 2018 she earned her Canadian citizenship through an application process that mandated the artist’s physical presence in Canada for at least 1,095 days in a five-year period. Each day is embodied by one small handmade vessel inscribed with a word or text pertaining to knowledge necessary to become a Canadian citizen. The labour and education required to obtain citizenship is replicated in the process of making the work. During scheduled facilitated engagements, visitors will have an opportunity to take a cup home in exchange for answering one of the questions from the Canadian Citizenship Guide. The next such opportunity takes place on January 15 from 6-9 PM at Remai Modern. Through considering one’s own knowledge of Canada’s history, geography, law and culture, visitors may empathize with the immigration experience or sense their own privilege. See more

#remaiinspired is back! After being blown away by the generosity of people in our community last year, we are excited to share new stories of how your memberships and donations impacted people in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan this past year. Watch for a new story each week, in the lead up to Giving Tuesday on December 1, and learn how you can keep the inspiration going! Since early 2019, Remai Modern has played host to a unique community event, where people come together over co...nversation, Muskeg tea and bannock. Fireside is a free event held in the museum’s atrium, named for the fireplace that welcomes visitors at the entrance. Created by Lyndon J. Linklater, Remai Modern’s Indigenous Engagement Coordinator, Fireside is an opportunity for people from diverse communities to come together to discuss a topic relevant to the museum’s program and people in our province. We want Remai Modern to be for everyone, truly. So I asked how can we do that? That’s the reason for Fireside, said Linklater. Storytelling is a very powerful way to learn and it brings people together. When you come together, hear a story, you connect with all those people in the room with you. That’s how we start to make change and that’s what the world needs more of. To date, Linklater and a series of expert guests have tackled themes including the Neil Stonechild Inquiry, the 60s Scoop and residential schools. The program offers an opportunity for invited community guests and attendees to chat, share and learn from one another. Visiting is such a traditional part of Indigenous culture. With the visiting, we shake hands when people arrive and we offer tea. We tell stories and laugh. Fireside is the same as if you came to my house and sat on my couch, Linklater said. More recently, a virtual version of Fireside spoke to two individuals about their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic in northern Saskatchewan. There was no bannock and tea this time, but the storytelling, conversation and community gathering were still central to the experience. An added bonus to moving online was that Fireside could expand its reach to people outside of Saskatoon. Having these opportunities to learn and understand each other is how the community grows together, said Linklater. Your support ensures programs like these continue to impact people all over Saskatchewan and that we can reach diverse communities. Donate today to keep the inspiration going! https://remaimodern.org/donate

Every January, Remai Modern hosts LUGO, a huge fundraiser and art party that welcomes more than 1,000 people to the museum. In 2021, this signature event regretfully has to be postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. We can’t wait to bring everyone back under one roof for another LUGO as soon as it is safe to do so. We are so grateful for Saskatoon’s incredible support of this event. To date, LUGO events at Remai Modern and the Mendel Art Gallery have raised more than $400,000... for art programs in our community. Keep watching remaimodern.org and Remai Modern’s social channels for updates as they become available. In the meantime, we still rely on your support. If you can, please consider donating, buying or gifting a membership, or shopping at the Art & Design Store. All proceeds support inspiring art programs for everyone. Today’s Meet the Artist Monday post is an introduction to Laura Kinzel, a Saskatoon-based art maker, exhibitor, educator, administrator and researcher. We’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at Kinzel’s studio and art practice (see our Instagram Stories feed for more). You can see her work at Remai Modern as part of borderLINE: 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art. Kinzel holds a studio art degree from the University of Saskatchewan and worked for more than three decad...es in gallery and museum programming, including at the former Mendel Art Gallery. Primarily a mixed fibre artist, she has completed multiple series exploring western medical delivery, power systems, women’s roles, aging and ritual. A recent series of human/dog hybrid sculptures including DOG-MA: Rudy Rolls on Dead Things While Zelda Plays, her work featured in borderLINE investigates sentimentality, kitsch and human attachments to objects and pets. The piece continues Kinzel’s investigation into grief and human connections with our animal relations. By melding human and non-human canine forms she satirically talks about life cycles and our bonds with each other. This hybridity suggests a new interstitial space, not just between physical bodies but also in Kinzel’s words, the psychic, spiritual, and emotional connection to canines. Laura Kinzel, DOG-MA: Rudy Rolls on Dead Things While Zelda Plays, 2016-19, wool, dog hair, Super Sculpey clay, acrylic paint, gel, poly stuffing, thread, assorted yarn, metal knitting needles, silk eyelashes, felting needle, 55 x 40 x 80 cm. Today’s #meettheartistMonday post is an introduction to Michèle Mackasey, one of the artists included in the exhibition borderLINE. Mackasey was born in Chibougamau, in northern Quebec, and grew up in northern Ontario. She lives in Saskatoon with her two children and holds deep ties to the community of Patuanak, where she was resident artist from 2015 to 2018. Her works in borderLINE, Tthai Ts’k’ázë Chogh and Aski Pikiskwin, are comprised of tiny bottles filled with transpa...rent coloured liquid and engraved messages, which fit together to create pixelated landscapes. The resulting images show a traditional camping and gathering place called Sandy Point, situated on Île-à-la-Crosse Lake, where Dene, Cree and Métis people of the region continue to camp during the summer months. Throughout her career, Mackasey has often worked with Elders and youth from northern communities, as well as Fransaskois and francophone newcomer youth. In works like this, Mackasey attempts to deconstruct borders based on age, tradition and language to create an exchange of Indigenous and French experiences between participants. The work reflects the cultural and linguistic borders imposed through French colonization, as well as cartographic borders superimposed on the lands of the northern Saskatchewan communities comprising Patuanak, Île-à-la-Crosse and Beauval, located within Treaty 10 Territory. Along with the growth of French Métis communities and development of the Michif language, French educational influences have had a significant impact on northern Indigenous language and culture. Part of a project co-presented by Common Weal Community Arts and Sans-atelier, funded through the SK Arts Artist in Community Program. -- Michèle Mackasey, Aski Pikiskwin (detail), 2020, glass bottles, coloured liquid, adhesive, steel. Created in collaboration with youth from Patuanak, Beauval and Île-à-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan. Courtesy of the artist. See more

Today’s Meet the Artist Monday post is an introduction to Don Gill, one of the artists featured in borderLINE, now on view in Remai Modern’s Marquee Gallery. Gill is a conceptual photographer and artist, who also teaches art at the University of Lethbridge. For the past six years, he has embarked on a walking project called Erratic Drawings: dongillwalking, which consists of daily mapped walks. His project for borderLINE features walks of the carceral landscape, areas that re...lated to prisons. Thinking of our movement through private land, corporate land, spaces of incarceration or asylum, and real and imagined borders begs us to question our own movements within different landscapes. Over the past 20 years, the vast roster of geographical sites that the artist has encountered ranges from Pike Island at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, to the Escuela Superior de Mecánica de la Armada in Argentina, which was used as a site of detention, torture, and disappearances during Argentina’s Dirty War. At each location, the artist’s movement is mapped and reproduced through a digital drawing paired with a photograph of the respective site. Don Gill, The Carceral Landscape (detail), 2016-2020, installation with digital drawings and photographs on vinyl, 198 x 127 cm each. Courtesy of the artist.
