Does the pattern look familiar? Our Curator Ryan McKellar’s work with dinosaur feathers trapped in amber has inspired nail art! Photo: @polish10atl via https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQX9erjUJH/

Amongst our fossil collection are little surprises. Our palaeontologist Emily recently found a Triceratops fossil wrapped in 25-year-old Calvin and Hobbes comic. A good reason to be careful with your fossils AND the material it is wrapped in!

Alex recently asked: Hi Ryan, objectively, what is the best bird? Curator Ryan Fisher answered: All birds are pretty great! They all do different things and have different roles in our environment that are important - some eat insects, nectar, and seeds, some are scavengers, and some eat other birds or mammals. My favourite bird in Saskatchewan is the Burrowing Owl. They are pretty interesting little owls and quite comical when you see them. Did you know that Burrowing o...wls nest underground in burrows that have been dug by other critters like Richardson’s Ground Squirrels, badgers and sometimes coyotes? Unfortunately, Burrowing owls are an endangered species here in Saskatchewan, so it’s pretty rare to see one. I’ve attached a neat picture of some Burrowing Owl chicks just learning to fly this was taken with a remote trail camera as part of a research project. Happy birding! --- Do you have a question for our Curators or Conservator? Ask us at https://royalsaskmuseum.ca//educ/ask-a-curator-conservator See more

Tomorrow is #AskAConservator Day. If you have a conservation question for our conservator, Victoria, feel free to ask! Our question for Victoria is: Q: What do conservators actually do? A: Great question I get this one a lot! Conservators are trained to care for cultural heritage materials that are typically housed in museums, archives, and galleries. Conservators undergo fairly specific training (e.g. objects, textiles, paintings, photographs, and paper), and have a stron...g understanding of both art and chemistry. Our work includes generally includes a combination of preventive care and remedial care. Preventive care includes all the things we do to prevent or delay the degradation of cultural heritage materials in museums, galleries, and archives. Some examples would be ensuring that all materials in our collections are stored in appropriate environments (temperature and relative humidity), fabricating custom supports for objects, monitoring and controlling pests, and making sure that all objects on display are not exposed to excessive amounts of light to prevent irreversible light damage. Remedial care refers to the treatments or hands-on interventions we undertake on cultural heritage objects to ensure that they remain stable in the future. The work performed by conservators can vary a lot depending on one’s specialty. For example, treatment/remedial work for an objects conservator may include reassembling an ancient ceramic, whereas for a paper conservator it may include gently humidifying and flattening tightly rolled documents, and for paintings conservators it may include mending tears on a painting on canvas. Conservators meticulously document what they are working on before, during and after treatment, and strive to ensure that all interventions are reversible.
