In our second installment in celebration of Black History Month, check out: THE CONSTELLATION PROJECT: Mapping the Dark Stars of Ballet The project maps the points at which the lives and careers of dancers Arthur Mitchell, Mel Tomlinson, Lavinia Williams, Mabel Jones Freeman, Doris Jones, and Claire Haywood intersected with each other, and other artists, institutions, and white allies contemporary to them. The Constellation Project places key Black ballet dancers within a v...irtual galaxy where you can explore each star's "orbit" and learn about their experiences. This goes beyond just Blacks in ballet; I see this as a truly anthropological study in black life through the lens of art, says Theresa Ruth Howard, MoBBallet's Founder/Curator View The Constellation Project here: https://mobballet.org/TheConstellationProject/ See more

#ThrowbackThursday Step back in time and catch a rare glimpse of RAD’s longest serving President, Dame Margot Fonteyn working behind the scenes to inspire young children taking their first steps in ballet. This never before seen footage of the Children’s Syllabus, created by Fonteyn with RAD teachers in 1972, shows the first time any of the RAD syllabus was recorded on film. It remained hidden in RAD archives until it was discovered recently, and will be available to view as part of the display at the V&A. Read more here > https://bit.ly/2VsBivr

100 years is a lot of history. In the case of the RAD, that’s 100 years of syllabi and exams, education of teachers and of their students, of competitions and performances, in the UK and far beyond. Even in the bulging confines of our archive, there are paintings and sculptures, letters, photos and publications galore. With our display at the V&A now open to the public, we investigate how the curators chose which stories to tell: https://bit.ly/3lu0wUN

Within days of each other, British Columbia and Alberta have instituted new COVID-19 restrictions. While RAD Canada and the wider dance community continue to put the safety and well being of students as our top priority, we feel further clarity is needed from both governments to determine if dance training classes are allowed to continue under the new public health orders. In both provinces, some forms of athletic training/in-person teaching sessions are permitted, while fitn...ess sessions are not. Dance training is fundamentally distinct from any form of fitness dance class. If you agree the government needs to clarify that dance training should be allowed to continue, as long as other athletic training activities are allowed, consider supporting and sharing these petitions: Here is the link for the BC petition: https://www.change.org/p/bonnie-henry-reopen-dance-schools- Here is the link for the AB petition: https://www.change.org/p/jason-kenney-keep-alberta-dance-st

What an inspiring story! check out Jules Barker's story, part of RAD Voices. The health benefits of dance are well documented, with research showing that dance can help diminish symptoms of depression. This was true for 62-year-old Jules Barker, who dropped into a ‘hole’ when her daughters left home. Following her therapist's suggestion and her daughter's encouragement, she tried Silver Swans ballet classes and has never looked back. Read more here > https://bit.ly/3d7KflQ

The Royal Academy of Dance and the wider dance community put the safety and well being of students as our top priority, as seen in the extensive safety measures dance schools have implemented in response to the pandemic. While the RAD respects the need for the increased restrictions recently put in place by the Ontario government, we feel strongly that dance training falls into the categories of activity which are allowed to continue: namely either 'activities and sports for children’ or 'in-person training for athletes'. If you agree the government needs to clarify that dance schools and dance training should be allowed to continue, consider supporting and sharing this petition for change: https://www.change.org/p/ontario-government-ontario-dance-s
