In honour of one of our long-time volunteer Directors, Luigi Zorzetto, who turned 90 years young yesterday, Santa Maria Goretti Centre donated 100 new winter ar...ticles of clothing to the Hope Mission. With our cold snap, these social agencies are in desperate need for winter wear for those they serve. The 100 is a number in a common well wish in Italian for things like a birthday greeting"cento anni" (a hundred years). Volunteerism and generosity has been a keystone feature of our Centre since 1958 when our Italian parents and grandparents literally built it from the ground up. Thank you to all of our volunteers. Cento anni to you all!!

"How did we get the name 'Boxing Day' here in Canada and other parts of the English-speaking world? Truth be told, the connection between Boxing Day and the Feast of Saint Stephen is has a very close relation. Many historians believe that the tradition of Boxing Day has grown out of long standing traditions of charitable giving and goodwillpractices especially associated with the feast of Saint Stephen. That charitable tradition became known as 'boxing.' Some historians tie... the use of the term to boxes of donations that were installed in churches during the pre-Christmas season of Advent in the early days of Christianity during the second and third centuries A.D. The day after Christmas, the boxes were opened and the money distributed to the poor. Another theory is tied to a practice that arose around the 16th century. Working-class people would spend December 26 seeking out Christmas 'boxes,' or tips, from the people they had served throughout the year." See more
