Karate Shinsa(Grading)
Jujutsu with swords and sticks We are two kata into the three that I consider an introduction to Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Jujutsu. Uki Gumo, Oroshi and Iwa Nami ...of the Eishin Ryu (chudan) set each begin, and stay, inside the usual arc of the sword. They require special ways of handling the sword, half-swording the Europeans would call it. Being in almost constant pain due to my back, and being of dubious balance, I can feel the weakness of each stance we take during the performance of the kata. Over the years, I have also done these three with a partner almost as many times as I have done them solo. They really do teach things that we have not run into so far, assuming we are learning the school from Omori to Oku. Often I get questions that I never asked, but by understanding the balace I can see the answers. If I can't perform a movement smoothly and without pain, that movement is likely wrong. This is using what tools you have to understand the principles, and to go beyond that to understand the woowoo stuff that young men like to laugh at. My current tools are pain and balance and they are actually teaching me quite a bit. So when you see me stagger across the floor, replay the image in your head of how I ended up there and take the lesson. Yesterday we were working on Shin Shin in Jodo class, a kata from the Chudan level of Shindo Muso Ryu I believe, it's hard to know which set we're working on in the Saturday morning and Tuesday evening classes because we review and push on gently, not driving through the set like we're trying to get to the bar for a drink afterward. Shin Shin has some "problems" when you learn it, one of them is the finishing position, when the jo is on one knee to the side of the tachi, a hand at tachi's hip, while tachi is standing, and has a sword that could be used to cut. As a beginner you have all sorts of fantasies about blocking the sword with the jo, but these are easily lost the first time tachi tests the theory. Yesterday I asked the Pamurai to "hurt me" as we performed the kata, this was possible because we are in the Tombo Dojo this weekend and have the room to mess around without demolishing the furniture. She flat out refused, so I changed it to "take my balance". She was willing to do that and suddenly, that final position of the kata became much less of a concern. As she moved to the side with me stepping around to cut her, I ended up completely off balance and incapable of making a strong attack. So much of both iai and jo, not to mention Niten Ichiryu relies on the control of mental and physical balance, and I'm finding out each day how very important that is, and how very little I understand. But I'm working on it. Each time I teach a kata I learn a bit more. Kim Taylor Aug 30, 2020 https://sdksupplies.com/ U.
