Hello Everyone, We are sailing tomorrow - the forecast is for cloudy weather with 40% chance of showers but the wind forecast of 10 to 15 knots southeast looks good. Tide Low of 2.6’ at 12:53 then flooding to 14.4’ at 20:20. This week we are trying a new start/finish line off the Shelter Islets outside Plumper Cove. The start will be between two round white buoys located as shown on the attached chart. David and John Sverre are putting the buoys down today and will remove the...m after the race. We will do our best to make sure the buoys have not dragged. If this start line works well enough that we want to use it for future races, we plan to put down heavier full time buoys soon. If you want to race please be in the new start area by 11:15am and check in on Vhf 73 as usual. COURSE DIAGRAM - assuming outflow winds (thanks to Mark Evans for preparing the course diagram): The course is about ten miles and consists of two loops. ALL MARKS TO PORT. LOOP ONE (the short course in red on the chart diagram): CROSS THE START LINE SOAMES BUOY CABLE BAY BUOY THROUGH THE FINISH LINE LOOP TWO (the long course in blue on the diagram) HOPKINS LANDING BUOY SOAMES BUOY CABLE BAY BUOY FINISH START TIMES shown in green on the attached list. 'Hope to see you out there rain or shine! Dave

Hi Everyone, (Also check your email for images of race course and start times) The weather for Sunday does not look good - rainy and little wind. Monday looks much better (sun and wind NW 5 to 15) and is a holiday - so WE ARE GOING TO SAIL ON MONDAY, NOT SUNDAY. ... We are trying a new start/finish line location and a new turning mark location near Plumper Cove. The idea is to try and avoid the congestion close to the Harbour entrance and to give us more course options. See the attached course chart. If you want to race, be in the new start area close to the Soames Buoy at 11:15am and check in on Vhf 73 as usual. START LINE: Between the Green Soames Buoy and a new white buoy about 100 yards south-east. COURSE (assuming inflow wind), all marks to STBD: 1st loop (the red dotted line on the chart) START > NEW WHITE BUOY OUTSIDE PLUMPER COVE > CABLE BAY BUOY>START/FINISH LINE 2nd loop (the blue dotted line on the chart) AFTER CROSSING THE START LINE/FINISH LINE > HOPKINS LANDING BUOY > PLUMPER COVE BUOY > CABLE BAY BUOY > FINISH START TIMES (approx 10 nml pursuit race): Start times are shown in green after the pre-start count down to zero. Note: The highest rated boat, Knothing Compares, is shown starting 4 minutes 10 secs before zero just to avoid longer waits for subsequent starters. Good sailing. We’re turning our attention to the frontlines. This time, on land. Responding to the global pandemicand seeking a way we could leverage 50+ years of engineeri...ng experience and technical fabric insightour team has spent the past two weeks working closely with the local healthcare sector to rapid prototype and test a safety-certified isolation gown for frontline healthcare workers. And today, at 11:00am, our facility in Burnaby, BC went into the first pilot run of the production of the first 200 Level 3 Isolation Gowns. Our 50-year history, of developing innovative solutions for both Military and public safety professionals, combined with the unique advantage of being part of a cutting edge design community here in Vancouver, provides us with the ability to adjust and pivot our focus on developing a solution - Mark Anderson, Director of Engineering, Mustang Survival From the initial 200 gowns going into pilot-production today, we’ll take out 10 samples to share with other local manufacturers who are getting prepared to set up production. And, if all goes well in this first pilot run, we’ll be flipping the entire factory to focus on making these gowns, full time. Beyond getting local manufacturers on board, we’re encouraging manufacturers with sewing and seam sealing capacity to jump on board; we’re planning on releasing the technical specifications so communities around the world can provide a local solution to this global crisis. Huge thanks and acknowledgement to Boardroom Clothing and KenDor Textiles; our collaborators in bringing this project to life. Finding this solution with such speed and agility wouldn’t be possible without the manufacturing community rallying behind the cause - and it’s the community coming together that’s going to help this garment positively impact as many people as possible. Click the link below to read more on the process of getting to today, and get details on how manufacturers can join in and bring more confidence and safety to our frontline healthcare workers. https://www.bcapparelandgear.com/news #livebeyondlandlater #flattenthecurve

HELP NEEDED, please share far and wide. IN NEED OF MATERIALS or MATERIALS INFORMATION TO MAKE GOWNS OR OTHER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Last week we implemen...ted our new isolation protocols. It has been strange to say the least as our door is normally open and the loft is normally quite busy during this week, which should have been the beginning of the Vancouver Island Racing Series. We tried to be ahead of the curve as it felt good to do our part by keeping our small staff isolated. Last week, when we first started the practice of locking the door people looked confused and concerned but now it seems we are all too used to this new strange reality of business through glass and cameras. That being said, we still feel relatively helpless against this pandemic. We have been putting on our thinking caps trying to figure out ways we can manufacture helpful PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Even if our ability is small, if we can stop one infection at the source, it can stop many at the community level. It is our understanding that right now, the highest demand is for non-medical specific PPE for people outside of hospitals and primary care facilities as most PPE supplies have been reserved for front line workers. With our CNC machine, using a pattern provided by UK Sailmakers Norway, we decided to start cutting protective gowns ourselves. While all this was happening, we saw online that there was a local company trying to produce masks. We got in touch as we assumed they were hand cutting them and offered to cut for them if they needed help raising their production capacity. They in turn put CTV news in touch with us who created a small piece to get the word out. The Coolaid Community Health Centre got a hold of us yesterday saying they had almost no PPE on hand and we delivered them 12 gowns for trials today. They are struggling at this time to keep staff from harm's way while trying to help some of the people most in need of our help within our city. Those suffering from homelessness and struggles with addiction were having a hard time before Covid-19 took our world and turned it upside down. We need help helping others, as we are struggling to find the appropriate materials to make the best PPE we can for people who need it. As mentioned before, the supply of medically graded materials is either out of reach from a cost perspective or we simply don’t know where to source them as it is very much outside of our normal wheelhouse. We are hoping to get the research and capability in place that should the pandemic worsen in our part of the world we can make a product that will offer the best possible protections to those on the front line. The only materials we have been able to source with any sort of prior medical approval is a product named Odyssey but at roughly $15 a yard and 3 yards required per gown it would be prohibitively expensive for us especially considering our weakened cash flow situation. We are not selling the gowns we make, we are giving them away and are only trying to contribute in a helpful way. The two materials we have tried so far is spinnaker nylon which is also expensive and needs to be sourced from out of the country. We were able to find a non permeable Tyvek product in a width that would work on our cutting machine. The Tyvek is much less expensive allowing us to make 50 gowns out of $750 worth of materials but it is stiff, noisy and uncomfortable for the wearer Best wishes, UK Sailmakers Northwest

UK Sailmakers is working to make personal protective equipment for healthcare providers during the Covid-19 pandemic. As an industry that has a lot of zero poro...sity material and machines to sew it all together, we are working hard to come up with PPEs that are desperately needed by doctors and nurses around the world. Mehmet Taylan, owner of UK Sailmakers Norway, was the first to come up with a design for protective gowns and has been donating them to doctors and dentists throughout Norway. He has also shared the design file with all sailmakers, whether inside or outside the UK Group. UK Sailmakers hopes our efforts will help get the world back to normal faster so that we can all live our lives again and so that we can sail with our friends again. #covid #PPE World Sailing Sailing World Cruising World Magazine Royal Ocean Racing Club New York Yacht Club - Main Page KSSS Sandhamn, Lökholmen & Telegrafholmen Royal Perth Yacht Club Chicago Yacht Club St. Francis Yacht Club San Diego Yacht Club Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (Official) Larchmont Yacht Club American Yacht Club Harken See more
