It’s a Winter Wildland out there! Sneak peek at our storm procedure: when we have epic amounts of snow like this and hungry animals waiting for their breakfast, plowing and shovelling can wait as we walk the meals out to our furry and feathery friends. #NSStorm #FeedingTime #Teamwork #WinterWonderland #ShubieWildlife

THANK YOU for joining us while we celebrated World Wetlands Day for a whole week!!! We wanted to share with you one way to engage with the wetlands at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park. This year, we hosted our second annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) with Ducks Unlimited Canada Atlantic and the Nova Scotia Bird Society in December. The CBC is the longest running citizen science initiative and not only provides insight into bird populations and migration but also a...n opportunity for people to get involved! As part of an initiative to promote the Christmas Bird Counts in Ecuador, Nic from Yachana Pictures joined us for our CBC around our Wetland Trail this year. He created this wonderful video to share our experience- take a look to find out what rarities we saw! We used an app called eBird to help identify species. Keep an eye out on our pages for future events! We hope you'll be inspired to discover the wetlands in your area. https://vimeo.com/503547992

Shubenacadie Sam and family spend the winter in a building off-display from the public with several of our birds that would normally migrate like swans, geese, and some birds of prey like vultures. Sam and other groundhogs are herbivores so we feed them a diet of alfalfa pellets, and fresh produce like carrots, apples, melons, potatoes, etc. Even though Sam has woken up from hibernation, naptime is still a favourite way to pass the day. #SnackTime #NapTime #SneakPeak #Herbivore #ShubenacadieSam

Red Squirrels are often seen scolding intruders and scurrying around their territory staying active all winter long. In a study where the tree cones in a squirrel’s cache were colour marked to the owner squirrel, it was found that 25% of the cones changed ownership. It was also found that all squirrels were guilty of stealing. #WinterAdaptation #RedSquirrels #NoHonourAmongTheives #FoodCache #ShubieWildlife

Join us for weekly updates as Sam counts us down to Groundhog Day on February 2nd 2021 with a prediction at 8:00am sharp. This year Groundhog Day is going virtual, so be sure to follow Sam on Twitter @ShubenacadieSam to be the first to hear the prediction! Did you know the first official Groundhog Day prediction was made in 1887 by Punxsutawney Phil in his hometown in Pennsylvania, while our very own rodent meteorologist, Shubenacadie Sam, has been predicting since the 1980's? Set your clocks. The countdown is on! #CountdowntoGroundhogDay #ShubenacadieSam #RodentMeteorologist #ShubieWildlife

Matt Langille, owner of Truly Canadian Chainsaw Carvings, created this carving that captures the Wildlife Park perfectly and adds to its natural beauty. Thanks again Matt! We are excited to share this wonderful gift with all of our visitors. #TrulyCanadianChainsawCarvings #PhotoOp #ShubieWildlife

The Canada Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare have closely linked population cycles. Snowshoe hare can have multiple litters in a year so as their population grows the lynx will have more successful litters too because their young will have plentiful food. The hare population will then crash once there isn't enough food to sustain them and the lynx population slows with them until grasses are once again plentiful for the hares to increase. The cycle repeats up and down over an 8-10 year span. #CanadaLynx #SnowshoeHare #PredatorAndPrey #PopulationCycle #ShubieWildlife

A classic #TongueOutTuesday from our Fisher, who is enjoying a raw egg for enrichment. These incredible predators hunt on the ground and in the trees, mostly for small mammals but also birds, eggs, reptiles, amphibians, fruits and nuts. #Fisher #Predator #AnimalEnrichment #ShubieWildlife

Beavers stay active throughout the winter but you're unlikely to see them above the ice. They store tree limbs under the ice to bring into their well insulated lodge to snack on the bark, twigs and leaves. They also use up fat stored in their tails and have waterproof fur to survive the chilly water. The entrance to their lodge is under the freeze-line so they spend their time either in the water or in their warm, dry lodge. #WinterSurvival #AmazingAdaptation #BeaverLodge #ShubieWildlife

Now that autumn has gotten more brisk, we've been working on taking our migratory birds off display. The barn owls, peregrine falcon, kestrel, vultures, swans and geese are all housed in a warm building off display for the winter. But don't worry we have lots of birds that are out year around including the bald eagles, red-tailed hawks and great horned owls. Visit them from 9:00am-3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. #Migration #Raptors #WinterSeason #ShubieWildlife

Tomorrow (Oct 31) is the final date of our Halloween weekends. We recommend you start your day early as the park is open from 9:00am-3:00pm and admission is first come, first served. Due to Covid-19 we will NOT be giving out candy and the park is operating at a limited capacity, so we expect there to be wait times. We welcome you to wear your costumes as you search for painted jack-o-lanterns in the park. Can you solve the riddle and find the right pumpkin to post on our soc...ial media channels? #ShubieWildlife Make sure to stop at the Wetland Centre to pick up a scavenger hunt through the wetland trail. There’s also a display about Nova Scotia’s endangered bats. #BatWeek We look forward to seeing you! #Halloween #Costumes #Pumpkins #ScavengerHunts #Peacock #SafetyFirst #ShubieWildlife See more
