This pandemic has brought a lot of stress and hardship to a lot of households. Let's talk about something that has brought a lot of joy (okay, and maybe some stress) to a lot of households; puppies! Let us see your pandemic puppies! This is Patriot, he is always so happy to come see us (and we're happy to have him).

Feline lower urinary tract disease is something we always worry about in cats. You may have heard of a urinary blockage before. Our male kitty friends do this very well because of their anatomy. Sometimes this can be caused by diet, genetics, or many other predisposed factors. Sometimes we don't actually know what causes it, there is an actual term for this; Feline Idiopathic Cystitis. A few signs of this would be: 1. Frequent trips to the litter 2. Straining or vocalizin...g in litter box 3. Over grooming or self trauma (barbering) A great way to help prevent this complications from surfacing is to encourage your cat to drink more water. This can be in forms of a fountain, ice cubes or as simply to add water to your cats dry or wet food. Always best to speak your veterinarian teams about urinary health veterinary diets and/or supplementation. If you have any questions, please feel free contact our office to book an appointment at 613-531-3334 or email us at [email protected] would be happy to help. See more

With today’s announcement from the Ontario government, our doors will remain closed to clients. We will still be able to see your pet(s) for vaccine appointments as well as new puppy & kitten appointments. Our surgery schedule will also remain the same. When you arrive for your appointment, we ask that you call to inform us that you have arrived. A technician will come out and inquire if you have any concerns to be addressed during the appointment. Then they will bring yo...ur pet inside for their exam. After the exam is complete you will receive a phone call from the doctor, who will go over their exam findings with you. When possible we are asking that payments be made over the phone. This can be done by either MasterCard or Visa. Thank you for your patience during this time. The staff of Sims Animal Hospital.

Bruce, now enjoying his senior days, was born November 2nd 2008 and within 10 weeks was sent from his "breeder" in Quebec to a now closed local pet store where we crossed paths. He was the only single pup in the back, gnawing at cardboard in the bottom corner in his best attempt to burrow to playmates. Immediately, I fell in love with his bulbous eyes and pig-like snort. I was finishing up my last year of high school and with an overwhelming number of paths to choose from, I ...Continue reading

While many Christmas plants are lovely and festive, quite a few of them, including poinsettias, holly, mistletoe and lilies (like amaryllis) are toxic to our dogs and cats. While poinsettias may cause gastric upset and drooling, lilies can cause acute kidney damage and can even be fatal. If you have these plants in your home, please keep them out of reach from furry mouths. A safer alternative to consider may be something like a Christmas cactus, which also have colourful blooms this time of year and are a pet safe alternative. This one pictured came from a local shop, The Plant Shelf.

This good boy is Seifer. He is an 8 year old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler). His favourite thing in the world is fetch. He loves his orange ball. This year we noticed he would walk a little funny after fetch; he would sort of shuffle like he was wearing slippers the day after a good long fetch. We just took it as a little soreness/tiredness from the exercise. After a couple months we decided to do xrays, wondering if his legs would show anything. As it turns out, it was... his back that is bothering him. He has developed spondylosis in some of his vertebrae. We don't go as hard with fetch any more; a few tosses here and there. We spend his boundless energy with more frequent/enriched walks. We have added joint supplements into his diet and he is doing great! We recheck his bloodwork to ensure he is able to tolerate NSAIDs. Thus offering him daily relief from inflammation which makes us all happy. If you’re pet is exhibiting any of these signs call our office at 613-531-3334 or email us at [email protected] for an appointment to discuss options to support our senior pets. See more

We adopted Archie from the Ottawa Humane Society in 2012 when he was 6 months old. Despite weighing all of 12 pounds and only having 3 legs he's ruled our house ever since! Archie is always up for a game of fetch or a run in the backyard. He takes his job of guarding our house from strangers, other dogs, and leaves blowing by very seriously. He may have a puppy face but Archie will be turning 9 years old this year. We started including bloodwork with his annual physical exa...m and vaccines when he turned 7 to ensure we can trend any changes that may happen as he ages. We've also recently switched him to a dry food formulated for senior dogs. He's not much of a foodie so this diet will help him maintain his muscle mass and shiny coat. Archie is a Pekingese mix, which means he has a lovely long back that can become sore when he forgets he's not a spry 2 year old anymore! A course of pain medication and rest gets him right back on track. We love our Archie to bits and pieces and we're glad he'll be the boss of our house for many years to come!'

Did you know that for certain dog breeds, they can be considered "senior" as early as 5-7 years old? Its true, our happy go lucky giant breed dogs have a shorter life span, making them seniors at "young" ages. That doesn't mean they can't still have fun! Contact our office at 613-531-3334 or email us at [email protected] for any questions on ways we help support our giant breed seniors. Ensuring they remain as healthy and happy as they can be. Colt and Meghan are surprised by this too! #simsaniamalhospital .
