It’s Resident Awareness Week, a celebration of the critical work done by medical residents in our hospitals and health care system. Sally Engelhart, Chief Medical Resident at Mount Sinai Hospital spoke about how residents have been an important part of the pandemic effort at Sinai Health. A typical resident’s schedule is already hard, but everyone has been eager to take on even more work during the pandemic to help out wherever it’s needed. There’s a real sense of camaraderie and we all feel like we’re in this together.

The Amsterdam and Paris lock covered bridges may be out of reach, but we’ve brought the love to the heart of Toronto. In the summer of 2020, we partnered with F...raser Paterson to create an art installation that pays homage to our champions of care, and our community that makes the world-class care and research at Sinai Health possible. This Valentine’s Day, lock in your love for friends, family, and frontline workers by purchasing a red heart as part of our installation. We write the name of your honouree, add the lock to the sculpture, and send you a photo of your place in our heart. Get yours today : www.sinaihealthlovelocks.ca

2020 for Sinai Health was a year like no other. Terms like new normal and physical distancing became part of our regular vocabulary, gathering two or three times a year for town halls became weekly telephone events, and our people were redeployed to support alternate areas of our institution. Amidst all of this, milestones were made and then surpassed. Take a look at our recap by the numbers:... https://www.sinaihealth.ca//looking-back-at-2020-in-numbe/ See more

As we recognized our people for their dedication at our Service Celebrations, we asked some of our milestone recipients to share highlights about working at Sinai Health. It’s inspiring to be a part of creating change every single day no matter how big the challenge or small the task. Working with such a dedicated group of people who share a common goal makes me proud to call Sinai Health my second home, says Darlene Lyte, Project Manager, Facilities Planning and Development, marking five years at Sinai Health. Read more about our people celebrating service milestones and their experiences at Sinai Health.

I find joy in bringing the healing power of music to our patients. For the second year in a row, Sarabeth Silver, Clinical Nurse Specialist, played the shofar for our patients and employees. A traditional instrument similar to the trumpet, the shofar is typically played at synagogue services in celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Extra precautions were taken this year to ensure everyones safety during the pandemic.

Almost one year ago, Shaza Irshad found out her developing babies had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). She was quickly rushed to the Ontario Fetal Centre, located at Mount Sinai Hospital. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) occurs in 10-15 per cent of identical twin pregnancies, where the twins share one placenta. Today, Shaza and her husband have their hands full with happy baby boys and a doting big sister.... I am so grateful to Dr. Keunen, Dr. Zhang and the entire team at the Ontario Fetal Centre. Thank you to Shaza for the wonderful photos and for sharing their story.

Bridgepoints Max Tanenbaum sculpture garden is an example of art that inspires healing. The installation by renowned Canadian artist William Lishman (1939-2017) celebrates the physical form and human spirit by depicting dance, sport and movement. When William Lishman died in 2017, a former Bridgepoint patient paid tribute with a letter to The Toronto Star about the impact of these works of art, writing, Their unusual grace and beauty became my daily inspiration and helped m...e recover. The sculptures are a gift from the Tauba and Solomon Spiro Foundation and were originally designed in memory of businessman and philanthropist, Max Tanenbaum.

The Family Integrated Care (FICare) model at Mount Sinai Hospital encourages parents to be active in all aspects of their childs care. Several studies have suggested that parents can play a larger role in providing direct care of infants in the NICU and that there are many short and long-term benefits of this practice. Perla and her husband Scott Brown laugh as they read together in her hospital room at Bridgepoint. Theyre happy to be able to spend time together face to face. Scott wasnt able to visit when Bridgepoint Health, like hospitals across the province, temporarily paused most visits due to COVID-19. Now, the couple is getting back to their regular routines as Sinai Health reintroduces visitors. Lily Yang, Senior Director of Quality and Patient Experience at Sinai Health says a measured, careful and yet compassionate approach is essential. Family caregivers play a vital role in the overall health and well-being of our patients. Health care organizations have the difficult task of balancing this need for family presence with the need to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposures and outbreaks in our hospitals to keep everyone safe.
