Slow and Steady Hikers 22.12.2020

Khumbu, Nepal, 2015: This ended up being our high point on Pumori. Just above 20,000 feet. We cut a platform just large enough for one tiny tent on a 70-degree... ice ridge. This picture basically speaks for itself. Near vertical drop out the door, morning sun on Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse. [Photo] John Easterling @juan_tomas This week as part of the #alpinistcommunityproject we're sharing work from John Easterling (Juan Tomás), who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. He writes, I’m not sure I would call myself an alpinist. I’m an engineer. I send most days behind a desk mathing up a storm in pursuit of energy efficiency in the built world. I think that 5.11 is more or less equivalent to impossible. I’ve spent more time remodeling my bathroom than I have climbing in the past several months. I struggle to place an ice screw with one hand. I get scared pretty much all the time. I read Steve House’s book about training for alpine climbing while eating a box of doughnuts and drinking a 12 pack of beer on the couch. But I love mountains. I dream about them all day, every day. I’ve structured my entire life around having access to climbing and skiing. It just doesn’t get old. I thrive on weekends and the handful of trips I get to go on each year. This series shares some of the places where the mountains have taken John, and the people he’s met along the way. This is his sixth post.

Torres del Paine, Magallanes Region, Chile The most spectacular summits of Torres Del Paine National Park are the Towers of Paine, or Torres del Paine in Spanis...h. These gigantic granite monoliths were shaped by glacial ice. The South Tower of the group is about 2,500 meters tall and is believed to be the tallest of the three. It was first climbed by Armando Aste. The Central Tower is about 2,460 meter or 8,100 feet tall, and was first climbed in 1963 by Chris Bonington and Don Whillans. The North Tower, standing at about 2,260 meters in height, was first climbed by Guido Monzino. Other summits of the group include the Cuerno Principal, about 2,100 m tall and Cerro Paine Chico, about 2,650 m.

Head to an Alberta Park this weekend for a chance to see the Leonid Meteor Shower. This annual event peaks tonight, and a darkened moon means ideal viewing conditions. We recommend you bundle up, make some hot cocoa and bring a camera! https://goo.gl/UycH7v

At 8,848 meters above sea level the summit of Mount Everest is the highest point on Earth. It is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, in the central p...art of the Himalaya Range. From the south the mountain is accessible through the long Khumbu Valley, home of Sherpas. Khumbu Valley and Khumbu Glacier terminate at the Western Cwm, a deep and narrow valley flanked on the west by Everest, north by Lhotse (8,516 m) and east by Nuptse (7,861 m). Access from the north is via the Rongbuk Glacier. with Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse and Mount Nuptse at Nepal / China(Tibet) border. See more
