Happy Kwanzaa (Heri za Kwanzaa) to all those celebrating! Hoping Kwanzaa brings you time to enjoy the blessings of family, community and togetherness. Let the candles of Kwanzaa light the past, the present and the future ahead. Kwanzaa is a festival of lights rich in African symbolism, it takes place each year from December 26th through January 1st. It was created by Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa. Kwanzaa is the cel...ebration of Black family and community, culture and traditions, history and heritage, and unbreakable hope for the future. It’s where ancestors and elders are honored and children are cherished. It’s where struggle is acknowledged but the persistence, resilience and transcendence of Black people are heralded. This year especially, so many Black families are feeling in need of the strength drawn from common cultural identity, community connection and shared faith. Kwanzaa means even more as we all continue to work hard for social justice and change. #happykwanzaa #HerizaKwanzaa #svnh
Merry Christmas to all those celebrating. Joy and blessings from our SVNH family to yours, this Christmas and everyday. As we celebrate the holidays let us continue to remember families and communities that are going through a lot and as a result, are unable to be merry this season. Wishing everyone a safe and lovely celebration. #Svnh #MerryChristmas2020
We have some exciting news to share with our neighbours as we celebrate the holiday season. The City has made us the operator of Fraser Commons located on Fraser Street and Marine Drive. There will be spaces for community programs and licensed childcare centre (daycare and preschool). The expected completion date is September 2021. The construction is coming along and we are happy to share this with our community. This would not be possible without your endless support. #Svnh #communityservice #cityofvancouver

October 16th was #WorldFoodDay. World Food Day is organized to bring awareness to how our changing planet affects food production and distribution. Related events explore several topics such as examining how agriculture needs to adapt due to climate change to migration affects food security. The goal of these sessions is to set goals that will eventually lead to building a Zero Hunger Generation. On a more personal level, World Food Day activities provide education to individuals on ways they can change simple daily habits and decisions to make a difference. Related resources help individuals understand the important global issues such as poverty, conflict and climate change that impact the world’s food supply and distribution. Wishing all our neighbours a joyous and prosperous Diwali! #Diwali2020 #Svnh
Let’s celebrate the festival in the true sense by spreading joy and light up the world of others. Have a happy, safe, and blessed Diwali! Diwali is a holiday celebrated around the world that got it start in India. It’s a harvest festival, but it's also an important religious celebration for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Even people who don’t belong to those three religions celebrate Diwali in India and other places in south Asia. It’s like Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve combined!... #happydiwali2020 #svnh

Sending everyone #thanksgiving wishes from our neighbourhood house to your house. May your home be filled with laughter and happiness. We are thankful for all our neighbours and their loved ones. As we celebrate thanksgiving this weekend let us all remember families that have been affected directly or indirectly by the COVID-19 pandemic. For most families thanksgiving is a tough time to celebrate, so let's find time to check-in with families that we know are having a hard time. Be nice to one another and stay safe as you celebrate. #svnh #thanksgiving2020
Today we remember and thank the brave people who fought for Canada and those who still serve. #remembranceday #lestweforget2020 #svnh

Today on Remembrance Day, we wear our poppies in honour of Canada’s fallen Veterans. The poppy is worn from the last Friday in October until today as a visual pledge to never forget the courage and sacrifice of those who have served for our country. Today, we take the time to reflect on the individual sacrifices that were made for our freedom, and acknowledge our own responsibility to continue to work towards what they were trying to protect. The Poppy Campaign is responsible for the distribution of poppies across Canada for Remembrance Day. For more information on where to get a poppy this Remembrance Day or additional ways to show your support, you can visit https://www.legion.ca/remembrance/the-poppy-campaign

As a social service organization, we honour the memory of the children and families affected by residential schools in Canada. We take responsibility in educating our staff and community through our services about the trauma inflicted by residential schools. Today we wear orange! #orangeshirtday #svnh #communitydevelopment
Have you heard of orange #orangeshirtday? Orange shirt day is a movement that officially began in 2013 but in reality, it began in 1973 when six-year-old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. Young Phyllis was wearing a brand-new orange shirt for her first day of school new clothes being a rare and wonderful thing for a First Nation girl growing up in her grandmother’s care - but the Mission Oblates quickly strippe...d her of her new shirt and replaced it with the school’s institutional uniform. Why #september30? The date, September 30, was chosen because that was the time of the year the trucks and buses would enter the communities to collect the children and deliver them to their harsh new reality of cultural assimilation, mental, sexual and physical abuse, shame and deprivation. What is the message? Orange Shirt Day was started by Phyllis to educate people about residential schools and fight racism and bullying. The message that Phyllis wants to pass along on Orange Shirt Day and every day is that every child matters. What can you do? There are many ways you can get involved! Wear an orange shirt on September 30th Learn more about the history of residential schools in Canada at www.victoriaorangeshirtday.com Educate yourself on Indigenous history This year, students can watch a virtual event online hosted by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Watch and Share Phyllis’ story.
