AMAZON RIVER DOLPHINS AT RISK Don't miss tonight's premiere of Sea Shepherd Brazil’s exclusive short documentary "Red Journey: Crimes Deep in the Amazon Riv...er" It's a revealing documentary that discloses the trail of crime around the preservation of Amazon river dolphins. River dolphins in the Amazon are killed to be used as bait for the illegal fishing for piracatinga, and this is putting them at risk of extinction - every 9 to 10 years, the population of botos suffers a loss of 50%. The documentary tells the story of the Sea Shepherd Brasil team and researchers at Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia - Inpa/Mcti who embark on a journey to reveal the plight of botos in the Amazon and expose the dangers to this iconic species. The crew onboard reports the importance of these animals and what we can do to prevent them from becoming nothing more than legends. During the Boto da Amazônia Expedition, we were able to capture exclusive images, exposing the risks to the dolphins. The release date is tonight, May 20th, at 6pm EST. Killing pilot whales and other dolphins is a cruel and unnecessary practice in the modern-day Faroe Islands. Some defend this outdated tradition by claiming it...'s sustainable. However, by killing every single member of a family of pilot whales each time a pod is driven to shore -- including the unborn fetuses -- you're effectively killing off the entire bloodline and all future generations. In the May 7th slaughter, 10 of the pilot whales were pregnant. Assuming half of the babies would have been female, and each female has an average of five babies in her lifetime, that means there are 2500 *less* pilot whales being born in the next 100 years alone. These hunts are cruel, unnecessary, AND unsustainable. It's time to leave this tradition in the past where it belongs. Disposable cups for hot or cold drinks all contain plastic. Even ‘papercups’ have a plastic lining - which makes it very difficult to recycle. Disposable cups can be easily replaced with reusable containers. All pollution that ends up in the waterways will eventually find its way to our oceans.... 90% of seabirds around the world have plastic in their guts. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Cigarette butts are mostly composed of plastics. As they make their way from the streets to the drains they will eventually end up in our lakes and oceans. Seabirds often mistake it for food as it is floating in the water. As they can not ingest it, plastics can block their digestive organs which will lead to starvation.
