Dear St. Mark family and friends, We thank our Lord for hearing our prayers and allowing us to come and unite with Him at His glorious church. Due to the recent lifting of the restrictions in York Region, the church will be adding more spaces to attend liturgies/vespers. The opening of the systems will follow this schedule for the next 2 weeks: 1. Tonight, Saturday Feb 20th, 2021 @ 8:00 PM: the system will open only for those who haven’t been able to attend a liturgy since D...ecember, 14th, 2020. 2. Tomorrow, Sunday Feb 21st, 2021 @ 12:00 PM: the system will be opened for entire congregation to register for only 1 liturgy. 3. Tomorrow, Sunday Feb 21st, 2021 @ 8:00 PM: the system will be opened for the entire congregation to register for multiple liturgies provided there are available spots. Please note due to a technical glitch with the email system, some congregants are not receiving our emails. We are working with our vendor to have this resolved. All liturgical information will be posted on the church website. We will be sending a SMS text message to alert everyone about the above changes, however please do share with family and friends. Please do not let your guard down and practice safe distancing, masks on and all precautions and government guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its spreading variants. This weekend, Coptic Orthodox Christians in Canada and around the world will welcome the Coptic New Year and celebrate the Feast of Nayrouz. * * *... Date harvesting is a familiar sight to many living in Upper Egypt’s countryside. The red date variety grows in Egypt between August and October. It is called Balah Zaghll after the nationalist leader Sa’d Zaghll (1859-1927). In the 1920s when Britain imposed censorship of the media to limit the growing popularity of Sa’ad Zaghll among the Egyptian masses, songs were created about the zaghll date and the zaghll pigeons with couched references to him. Popular singers of the period used the zaghll date to communicate such a message. Coptic Orthodox Christians also culturally celebrate the New Year or the feast of Nairouz by eating red dates. Tomorrow is the beginning of the blessed Coptic year. It is necessary to keep it a holy day with full purity and chastity. Let us start a new demeanor as St.Paul the Apostle says, "Therefeore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; Behold, all things become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation." (2 Cor. 5:17-18) And Isaiah the Prophet says, "The... Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives.
