In honour of the very first Terry Fox Run, which took place 39 years ago today, Google is celebrating Terry as their Google Doodle image in Canada, U.S. and man...y other countries around the world. The Doodle, illustrated by Toronto-based artist Lynn Scurfield, replaces the usual Google logo with an image of Terry running in a valley near a lake. #ThanksGoogle for paying tribute not only to Terry but also to the millions of people around the world who have adopted his dream of finding a cure for all cancers as their own. We welcome you to support the 40th Terry Fox Virtual Run on Sunday September 20th by fundraising or donating at terryfox.org
#OnThisDay - September 1, 1980 - near Thunder Bay, ON As he neared the 18 mile mark, Terry could see miles of supporters along the highway, cheering him on, say...ing, Keep going, you can do it, we’re all behind you. Terry felt like he was having a heart attack, the pain was so intense. He took a break and crawled into his sleeping bag, hoping the pain might subside. It didn’t. Terry got back up, ran another mile until he could see no more people along the road. It was then he said to himself, This may be my last mile. He got in the van and asked his best friend Doug to take him to a hospital. Later that day, Terry called his parents in Port Coquitlam and told them the cancer had returned. He had run his last mile of the Marathon of Hope. In his last journal entry, all Terry wrote was: "21 miles. 3,339 miles total." Honour Terry's Try. Donate today. https://bit.ly/3lHgE6v
On September 1, 1980, after running 3,339 miles (5,374km) Terry Fox was forced to end his Marathon of Hope in Shuniah, ON just east of Thunder Bay. Take a minute today if you're in the area to head up to the Terry Fox Monument and join our visitor centre staff as we remember Terry, his courage and his committment to finding a cure for cancer. #terryfox... #40years See more
