The Toronto Vintage Clothing Show is this weekend! We spoke to Maddie Dolegowski of Dear Hazel May about the fine art of vintage shopping. Look for her at Booth 508! What would you tell someone who is new to vintage fashion? Where should they begin? Start with something you love, and find the original of that. Whether that’s jewelry, a classic fit and flare dress or cashmere, hunt down the real deal and feel the difference in quality.... Are there trends in vintage? If so, what’s hot now? Statement jewelry and the 1970’s are having a moment. Any recommendations on the best way to mix vintage with new? The best example of this is at Pearls and Pockets. Dear Hazel May stocks fabulous vintage and the rest of the shop is a girly wonderland of modern pieces that mix perfectly with vintage. If you wear a modern dress, add a vintage statement necklace or earrings. If you choose a vintage dress, add modern shoes, and wear your hair and makeup as usual. Keep it equal parts modern and vintage and you can’t go wrong! How should one plan to shop the Vintage Clothing Show (what to bring, how to work the room)? My best advice is to keep an open mind. You never know what vintage will speak to you. If you have a favourite vendor, follow their social media for previews, most of them will post their booth number. Make sure you wear something that is easy to change out of, or even better, easy to try things on over top of. And bring cash, most people are able to take credit cards, but cash is always appreciated. :)
