2011 Chicago - Mackinac C&C 43' - Usual Suspect Overall Winners Year of the big storm capsizing the Kiwi 35 Wingnuts with 2 casualities. We were part of the search and rescue in the middle of the night. 80 knot winds, lightening all over. Helicopters were launched to look for bodies in the water but they were trapped under the boat with their tethers. We took the outside of the Manitou Islands as we were powering on at 13-16 knots of boatspeed. A heavy displacement boat from ...the early 1970's gave us a good ORR Rating for downwind conditions. We kept the spinnaker up in 35 knots for a few hours. We went on and competed in the Port Huron - Mackinac the next week with some calmer racing weather then the 40-80 knots we saw through the 2nd night racing towards the top of Lake Michigan. This was the start of offshore racing for me. See more
