According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 13 people suffer from anxiety - Here are 10 tips for relieving anxiety: 1. Take a deep breath - inhale slowly and count to 5. Hold it to a count of 5 and slowly exhale to a count of 5. Repeat several times; ... 2. Find a reason to laugh/smile/feel grateful - for example, if you are anxious about your job, practice gratitude for having a job etc.; 3. Accept the fact that you're feeling anxious. Feel in your body where you are holding your anxiety and focus your attention on that area without fighting or trying to get rid of it; 4. Ask yourself why you are anxious - Question youself as to why and what you are anxious about and calmly assess the best course of action to take; 5. Talk it out - with a friend, pet, family member - this will help release your inner tension; 6. Take immediate action instead of sitting still so that your mind focuses on a goal-orientated task instead of general anxiety; 7. Keep a food diary - You may be experiencing food intolerances/sensitivies that may be directly causing and/or exacerbating the anxiety you are feeling; 8. Try taking a natural supplement known for reducing anxiety - we like EFAs, Adaptogens and helpful herbs like valerian and bitter herb hops, to name a few; 9. Get moving - exercising for at least 20 minutes a day helps your body activate the anxiety-reducing effects of physical activity; 10. Drink Chamomile tea - it has wonderful compounds that bind to your brain receptors in the same way as valium; If you have more questions and are interested in further information on how to manage or treat anxiety and stress - call and book a consult with Dr. Townsend, N.D at 289-337-4217 www.naturopathburlington.ca

What are hormones, really!? Hormones are powerful messengers that direct and control every function in the body. In fact the body secretes and circulates some 50+ hormones, that we know about! Normally when your body is functioning optimally, hormones fit their receptors like a lock and key. However, when hormone levels are imbalanced the body processes can malfunction and in turn affect weight, sleep, mood and libido. Many things can contribute to hormonal imbalances in th...e body, including synthetic hormones, xenoestrogens(estrogen imitators - natural or synthetic), caffeine, alcohol, stress, poor nutrition and lack of/too much exercise. Ways to keep your hormones in check include - reducing your use of plastics (plastic food containers, cups etc - these contain xenoestrogens and can leach into your foods and drinks), get enough sleep, avoid too much light from screens at night, manage stress, moderate exercise, avoid refined sugars, eat lots of health fats and plenty of fiber throughout the day! If you suspect that you may be living with hormonal imbalances or are looking for more information on your current symptoms, it is important to get the right testing done so that your symptoms don’t turn into bigger issues. Book an initial consult with me, Dr. Kim Townsend, ND, to discuss your health concerns. During your initial consult I will discuss a number of diagnostic tests available including urine, saliva and serum that will help to determine the status of your hormones and a treatment plan going forward! www.naturopathburlington.ca See more

You... Go to the gym Take the stairs Eat more veggies and fruit Passes up pizza again this week ... AND you still struggle with weight gain and/or little to no weight loss! It may be time to consider Food Sensitivity testing! When you have food sensitivities/intolerances, foods that are otherwise considered harmless can cause problems for your immune system. Since this sensitivity often does not have a direct and immediate effect (think hives or anaphylactic response), we overlook the impact they may have on our bodies. With food sensitivities/intolerances, your body produces IgG antibodies to certain foods. This can cause problems up to 3 days after consumption of the trigger food. A delayed response can cause chronic inflammatory reactions in your body which can lead to weight gain or stubborn weight loss. When your digestive system is stressed the body begins to feel like it under attack - so it holds onto supplies, storing fluids and increasing weight. The IgG antibodies also impair cellular metabolism in your body which is often another cause of weight gain. It unpairs your body’s ability to digest, absorb or utilize nutrients effectively which impairs metabolism and energy use in the body. The IgG Food Sensitivity test measures high levels of IgG antibodies to foods in your blood, detecting which foods trigger reactions in your immune system. By avoiding these foods you help your body return to normal, which will help with fat metabolism and healthy detox which will help you lose weight in a natural healthy way. Want to learn more? Book a consult today with Dr.Townsend ND to learn of this type of testing is right for you along with many other healthy steps that you can take to feel better! www.naturopathburlington.com See more

Lovely Lavender is gracing our garden and we want to enjoy it any way we can. Great for relaxing our nerves and delicious in our favourite summer drink- lemonade! Make a strong pot of tea with lavender flowers and once it is cool, add the juice of 2 lemons and 10-12 drops of stevia. Stir and enjoy in a tall glass with ice. Makes 4 servings.
