Bridget Park is a high school senior from Reno, Nevada. Inspired by the tragic loss of her brother, Bridget wrote her debut memoir at the age of 15 in the hopes that her story would encourage others to find healthy ways of grieving. In this talk, Bridget shares her insight on how to comfort a grieving teen. #givingtuesday2020 https://givingtuesday.ca/partners/2726 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySeZLAqcnuo

Did you know our area has an amazing peer support group called Compassionate Friends? This is from their web page: The Compassionate Friends offers support in the grief and trauma which follows the death of a child; no matter the age or cause. We cannot hurry you through it, or take away the pain, but we can help you understand more about this life altering experience. Sometimes just knowing you are normal can be helpful. Though it may be difficult, we encourage you to atten...d a Compassionate Friends meeting at your nearest chapter. We know it takes courage to attend that first gathering, but those who do come find an atmosphere of understanding from others who have experienced the grief that you have now. Nothing is asked of you. There are no dues or fees and you do not have to speak. Time has proven that with CARING and SHARING the death of a child, comes healing. Our local contact is Noreen Kabatoff, she can be reached at 250-367-4567.

It is not uncommon to lose friends after a death - people we assumed would always be there for us. And in 2020 we have been hearing more than ever from people who have lost friendships over political divides. In many of these cases, these were friendships we thought would be part of our lives forever - sometimes people who had been part of our lives longer than our partners or children. These friends may still be living, but grieving the loss of these friendships . . . it’s real. Very real. https://whatsyourgrief.com/what-happened-to-best-friends.../ Taken From What's your Grief Facebook page
We are so pleased to Welcome Rosanne Arcuri into the Hospice Family. She is our Grief and Loss Director. Here is a little bit about her. I was lucky enough to be born and raised in Trail. I worked 15 of those years at Teck. I was laid off in July 1993 and started the nursing program at Selkirk College, September that same year. I completed my undergraduate degree in 1998 and worked in Trail. By 2002 I moved to Calgary for work and spent the next 10 years working as a Nurse,... achieving my Masters of Nursing, teaching Nurses, and working as a Clinical Nurse Practioner. I retired in 2012 and moved to Kelowna. My passion for nursing permeated through my body and I realized I was not yet finished with Nursing. So, I worked as a home care nurse for the next six years in the areas of Palliative/End of Life care and as a member of the Emergency Response Team for the Palliative Care Program. I retired in 2017 and moved back to Calgary in 2018. In March of 2020, I was asked to renew my nursing license and help with the COVID pandemic. This provided me an opportunity to act upon my other passion for counselling. In May I started a post-graduate program to become licensed as a Family and Couples Therapist. The isolation and loneliness of COVID opened space for me to reflect on my reasons for living in Calgary and how much I missed my daughter. By October 2, I was back in Trail and starting my new position at GTHS. I am so happy to be seeing old friends and reconnecting with community. It feels so great to be back. I have unfortunately, experienced many losses in my life. I believe wearing the two hats of counselor and nurse provides me an opportunity to serve my Trail in a supportive way. I feel privileged to be working at the Greater Trail Hospice Society and with this amazing Team. We are small but we are mighty... See more

During this time of increased isolation, many people affected by dementia have felt disconnected from their usual support networks and have faced unexpected challenges. Anyone with concerns or questions related to dementia can call the First Link Dementia Helpline, which is available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m 1-800-936-6033. This is a very good article on finding joy. It really resonated with me. https://www.prevention.com//men/g33002023/how-to-find-joy/
There is no road map to grief. There is no road map to the pandemic. And there is certainly no road map to grieving deaths during this time. But we do have a free online course to provide some support and tools for those grieving a recent death. If you’ve lost a loved one this year and it was impacted by the pandemic, please join is for this course - free thanks to a grant from the Funeral Service Foundation. Thank you to What's your grief. https://school.whatsyourgrief.com/p/grief-isolation-covid
