Body maintenance is high maintenance. We all know this. But what is a body? Skin, fascia, muscle tissue, tendons, ligaments, organs, nerves, the brain. You’re arterial and venous systems, nervous system, digestive system, respiratory and lymphatic systems all play a role in your feelings of wellbeing. Making sure each individual system is functioning properly is a huge factor in wellness. When one system starts to deteriorate it will slowly affect other surrounding systems. A...nd over time you will begin to notice this in your everyday life. Excess muscle tension is the most common form of muscular dysfunction. Despite its frequency of occurrence, it rarely receives the level of attention it deserves. Perhaps because muscle tension is usually over simplified, but the fact of the matter is, muscle tension can have adverse effects on surrounding body systems. For example, a taut muscle that is in close proximity to a nerve, over time will take up space and start to push on that nerve. Think about it this way, you’re walking down a narrow hallway and the walls start to close in around you. They don’t close all the way, just enough so your can continue to walk, but close enough that you have to really squeeze and push your way through. The restriction and lack of space causes your skin to become irritated and may even form a rash or bruise. Except in this case there’s no rash, there’s sharp shooting pain that is either localized or worse, travels to other parts of the body. Taut muscles pressing up against nerves can be very painful. And if left untreated can become chronic. So, regardless of the simplicity of the condition, muscle tension should be treated regularly to avoid chronic pain symptoms. Luckily, Unified Therapeutics offers multiple treatment options that deal directly with muscle tension. Simply call 780.884.1833 to book your consultation and get on the right track in muscle tension management. See more

Back to basics. This is my interpretation of Therapeutic Massage. Firstly, let me give you some official definitions, as well as, my interpretations of these words. The word Therapeutic from Webster’s medical dictionary is defined as: ... of, relating to, or used in the treatment of disease or disorders by remedial agents or methods; having a beneficial effect on the body or mind; producing a useful or favourable result or effect. That’s the official definition. My interpretation of therapeutic goes like this: A form of treatment performed on persons with the intent to facilitate bodily healing processes and restore homeostasis. The word Homeostasis is a state of stable equilibrium between the interdependent elements of an organism, especially as maintained by physiological processes. (Webster’s and Google definition). Meaning, that feeling of balance between body, mind, and environment we all search for. The official definition of massage is: Manipulation of tissues with hands for therapeutic purposes (Webster’s medical dictionary). As well, massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a persons health and well-being. (www.nwhealth.edu/school-of-mass/massage-therapy-definition/) So, therapeutic massage can be defined, (in my mind) as a modality designed facilitate body healing by manipulating soft tissues to restore homeostasis. Now, with that in mind, know this. Therapeutic does not mean more pressure. It is simply, a form of treatment designed to restore muscular balance. The amount of pressure varies person to person. And is adjusted person to person. Based on their own personal assessment prior to treatment. Specific points on the body may be more tender with pressure, but that does not mean they require deep pressure to be released. A good understanding of anatomy applied with manual manipulation of tissues (affected and surrounding) ensures effective release, without the added pain of deep pressure. Makes sense? Hopefully I’m not just rambling. Ask if you have questions, or better yet book an appointment. Im a licensed CRMTA member, actively practicing in Therapeutic Massage and general wellness.
