Blue, Arthur, Penner the Seal and Darby were released on October 13 after more than 2 months in rehabilitation. They were all rescued in the summer, too young to care for themselves and often in poor condition. Thanks to the efforts of our care team and many volunteers, they now have a second chance. Good luck Blue, Arthur, Penner and Darby! On Wednesday, we released Alice Chanel, Beau, Dexter, HF Justin Turbot, Peachie and Sam. After a few months of rehabilitation at the rescue centre, they were deemed fit enough to make it on their own and all but one of them (we won't mention any names here) couldn't wait and headed straight for the waves... Good luck out there, guys, and make us proud! Learn all about their stories here: https://mmrpatients.org/release/2020-09-02-porteau-cove/... And if you'd like us help rescue & release more of these seal pups, please consider symbolically adopting one of our patients: https://mmrpatients.org/gift/adopt-a-seal/
"Penner the Seal" was rescued when she was just 7 days old, emaciated and dehydrated, she didn't look all that great, but just a week later, she had already perked up and is now doing really well in rehab. Watch her as she makes her first steps in rehabilitation (and meets some friends). We filmed this footage of Joey a few weeks ago as he was getting more comfortable in the water and was beginning to make his first attempts at swimming and diving. Ark arrived in rather rough shape, emaciated and severely dehydrated. A veterinary technician immediately gave him a check-up and administered fluids subcutaneously. Ark has since perked up quite a bit, and is already looking much better. You can follow Ark's progress in rehab until his release here: https://mmrpatients.org/patient/pv2051-ark/... ... or symbolically adopt him to support his here with a small one-time donation to the rescue centre: https://mmrpatients.org/gift/adopt-a-seal/13944/ FAQs: Q: What's the bubble under his skin? What's the access line for? A: Fluids are given subcutaneously (under the skin). It's an easy, quick placement of fluids. Fluids are placed under the skin but near the muscle in an area that then absorbs the fluids without intravenous access. It's much less obtrusive than an IV access. Q: How long does he stay in that blue tub? A: The blue tub is his crib. It keeps him safe and warm; is the place where he gets his swims and is fed. He will stay there while he is in quarantine before being upgraded to a larget tub, then a training pool and ultimately a pre-release pool.
Joey seems to have very strong opinions about his toys. We filmed his bath, and an encounter with his previously well-liked pink jellyfish toy. It didn't go so well... We've released our first babies! Sealy Dan (named by the Daily Hive Vancouver audience), Focarelli, Okeana and Yuki were the first seal pups to return to their ocean home this year. While Sealy Dan and Yuki 'ran' straight into the waves, Okeana and especially Focarelli took their time, and in the case of Focarelli needed quite a bit of convincing. But within a few minutes after entering the water, they had all swum off in different directions, exploring their new homes. We'll... miss you guys be good and make us proud out there! We would like to thank our donors and supporters who made the rescue and release of these patients possible. A special thank you also goes out to all our adoption donors who supported Sealy Dan, Focarelli, Okeana and Yuki while we cared for them at the rescue centre. And we want to acknowledge Harbour Air Seaplanes for their help in getting all four of them to Vancouver! You can check out the list of all of our patients here: https://mmrpatients.org/list/

Blue arrived at the rescue centre when she was estimated to be just about a week old. She is still partially covered with lanugo, the white, very fine hair that covers a seal pup in the mother's womb as it develops. She has a lot to say (so vocal!)... and so pretty!
